2015 SPIRIT OF AMERICA

Fullbore Rifle Prone Championship

Sponsored by the Bald Eagles Rifle Club, the 2015 Spirit of America matches will be held at the NRA Whittington Center near Raton, New Mexico on 12-19 September. The match is open to sling shooters, F-Open and F-TR shooters, and include matches at 300, 500, 600, 900 and 1000 yards. This year’s F Class competition will be the “Fullbore F Class National Championship”.

Since 2002 the Bald Eagles have hosted the Spirit of America match, and it has grown in both stature and reputation with every year of competition. It is one of the premier fullbore matches in the world, and the range at Raton is one of the most beautiful in United States.

The short ranges are fired in the mornings and the long ranges in the afternoon. Short range matches (300, 500, and 600) are fired “two to the mound” while the long ranges (900 and 1000) are fired “string fire”. Both individual and team matches are fired and competitors not belonging to a recognized or hometown team are encouraged to join a “make-up” team for the experience and the camaraderie of team shooting. The total round count for the week is more than 400 (counting practice and “blow-off” shots.) That’s lots of shooting on one of the best ranges in the world. It’s worth the trip!

Except for 2014 the SoA has been the official F-Class Fullbore National Championships every year since 2008. In 2014 the NRA held the matches at Camp Perry, Ohio in conjunction with the Fullbore Sling Championships which was moved there as a runner up to the ICFRA World Championships which is being held there this month. Since no F-Class is being held at Perry this year the Championships has come back to Raton and the Bald Eagles Club. While Fullbore Sling will be shot at the SoA, the National Fullbore Sling Championships is being held at Perry as I write this.
If you haven’t shot the SoA be advised that this is the only US match in which the 3 winners (Sling, F/TR & F-Open are “chaired” off the firing line. Each discipline has its own chair. The F-Open is a rocking chair!

F-Open must be for the OLDer folks. lol

I'm considering it. Wonder if there will be enough F/TR shooters to form teams? Any F/TR shooters thinking about teams for this match?

Russell, there will be at least 3 of us from Phoenix, including the team matches. We are probably going to form an F-open team, but will keep in touch. (yes, I shoot F-TR, but will probably shoot open for the team stuff).

Bryan,
Comfortable? You haven't sat in it yet! It can be a wild ride if the lifters don't have their act together, but there is nothing like it.

Larry, we're all going to do our best to help you "spread the wealth" with the wild chair rides. ;D See you soon in beautiful Raton.
