2015 Bushnell Brawl review

Last weekend Rifles Only hosted the Bushnell Brawl, 130 shooters from across the nation headed to Kingsville Texas to compete in a Precision Rifle Series Points Match. Jacob set a challenging coarse of fire that included; Rifle Movers, Pistol Movers, positional, KYL racks, cargo nets, a school bus, rooftops, and a long range prone portion from the tower. Target sizes ranged from generous, to a 12x8 steel ISPIC at 1000 yards. Friday conditions ranged from a 15-25 mph wind, with Saturday winds from 10 to 18 mph. The helicopter stage ran for a portion of Friday morning but was later called off due to the high winds. Bushnell once again was the title sponsor for the match and offered a generous prize table offering, as well as other sponsors donating there products.
Saturday after the match concluded scores were tabulated and Jacob and Lisa catered in a delicious dinner of barbequed beef and sausage links. I had the pleasure of shooting my final match for Team Rhino, as I transition back to the new 2015 Team Surgeon Rifles. With over 25 PRS matches under my belt I finally put 2 solid days of shooting together and won the Match. I could not be happier with my performance as I shot a new rifle in 6.5x47 from Surgeon Rifles, using the 140 grain Berger Hybrid, and the new Vortex Gen 2 rifle scope.

Congrats Jim, great shooting. I have a couple of friends from here that went and they said it was very challenging to say the least.

Congrats Jim. To win this kind of match is a true accomplishment. I had the pleasure of shooting with that guy on the right in the first pic at the Michigan Steel Challenge last year. Tomas is a hoot!

Nice shooting Jim, we need video for this kind of match! :)

scoring is 1 point per hit, unless it is a KYL you shoot to accumulate points on a target rack, targets get progresivly smaller and are worth 1,2,3,4 points if you miss you lose all points, you can stop anywhere on the rack and keep the points you earned.

That's a video link to the 2014 PRS finale match in Frost Texas.

Is that out of 100? How is the scoring done on a match like this?

Jay, no that was out of about 138 rifle points and 20 pistol points possible.
Winds were high and that always lowers the scores, for example at 1000 yards you have 40 seconds to shoot 5 rounds on a 12" tall by 8" wide steel plate, I went 2 for 5, I think the best score was 3-5. At 700 yards we shot an 8" circle, on that I went 5-5 but it requires you to come up with a solid wind call before your first shot. These matches are usually won or lost on the barricade stages with targets under 600. It's not easy in that wind to hit on steel plates shooting from odd positions. Every wind call is critical because the velocity change during your string of fire can have you holding 1.2-2.5 mills of wind in a 40 second run. With most targets between .3-.5 wide on prone shots you really need to be on top of the conditions. Barricade targets can be from .5-.8 wide typically and positional target may get as generous as 1.0 mils wide.

That's a link to my facebook page, about 3 post down is the 515 yard mover target, I shot 7-10 in a 15 mph left to right wind, the pause is when the target reverses direction. A guard plate keeps you from shooting as the target pause. Oddly enough the target was a steel Dolphin standing on his tail, and the stage was called "stop dolphin rape" You need to understand Jacob to find his humor in that. Your target width was about 6-8"

Great job Jim. Now that your winning the big paying matches, you probably won't come back and shoot F class with us. I went to Ryan's shop today. He said that you were back to our area, and we're going to stop by. Had I know ahead, that you won this match. I would have stuck around longer to hear some stories. We know how your always full of them!

Congrats Jim! I see you almost doubled George Gardners score, that's impressive!

George had a couple of bad days, it happens to the best of us, every match offers different challenges. I happen to like shooting in the wind and that helped me at this match.

Shooting USA was at the match filming and I'm sure they will run the program in a few months as they did a couple years ago.

Thanks for all the comments guys, as many of you know I did enjoy a good run for a few years shooting f-class. These matches are much more challenging for me and thus more fun. My years of f-class prepared me well in the LR portions of these matches.

Who built your rifle and what are the specs?
Thats a good one Rick. Jim builds rifles. Center Shot Rifles is his business. He designed the stock, and muzzle brakes that Ryan Pierce sells. He now builds the rifles for Surgeon.
