The farmers are doing their first cutting of alfalfa here in central Ohio. Three evenings ago, I set up in a freshly mowed field that had not been raked and baled yet. Shot two and saw a mama & three or four young out but they were 'skylined' so I couldn't shoot them from my setup location. I told the farmer about them and asked if I could drive on a part of the field that had just been baled so I could get a better angle. He agreed and the next morning I set up in the new location but could not see them thru my scope sitting on my portable bench due to a rise in the field. But the mother finally stood up so I could just see her head. Nailed her in the head at 245 yards. This morning (alfalfa is now raked and baled) I was able to drive up on top of the field where I could get a clear view of that hole plus others. Shortly after I set up the young were out. As I was settling the crosshairs on the first one he moved in front of another (180 yards). I took the shot and thought I might have got both. I then shot two more and in a few minutes another was visible at the same hole. I thought I must have missed one or didn't get a "two fer". After shooting it, curiosity got the best of me and I had to walk to the hole to confirm. There were five young laying there. I have never seen five young to one groundhog before. I guess this past mild winter and spring helped. A little later, I shot three young and their mother at a hole 45 yards past the first hole. Sweet - 9 groundhogs with 8 shots. I then missed one at 403 yards that was playing 'jack-in-the-box' with me in a field of oats. After changing locations I got two adults out of the same hole before calling it a day.
