2012 Campaign

In 5 to 6 weeks the 2012 campaign will begin! Not a political one, but my relentless pursuit of those little hairy beasties - the eastern woodchuck better know here as the groundhog. :)

I dug the varmint rifles out this week and I'm getting them ready. Had a great year in 2011, nailed 130 hogs. I have unfinished business however since a few escaped my wrath and are probably still laughing at me for missing them. :(

The farmers often tease me saying they know when I'm coming since they see the vultures following my truck. Well they have to eat too don't they. :(

I'll admit, I'm a hopeless hogaholic - I'd go every day if my wife would let me. :)

LOL! This thread made me laugh. Last year I shot my first ever groundhog here on the farm in Nebraska. Heck, I didn't even know we had them. I was going out to shoot a couple squirrels cause I had a hankerin' for some fried squirrel and as I walked out the door there was this large critter sittin' in the grass pasture about 90 yards away. So, I aimed my little Norinco .22 and bam...it rolled over deader than a door knob with a shot to the ear.

Imagine my surprise upon getting up there and seeing that it was a groundhog and not a fox squirrel! So, after taking a picture I got on line to see if you could eat the critters. Sure enough! There are tons of recipes! Not being one to shy away from something new it was cooked up and was actually very tasty!

This year, I'll be keeping my eye out for more of the critters since I KNOW they are around here now!

I use to eat them too but my wife threatened to leave me if I put any more hog legs in her freezer.

I'd save the hind legs and at the end of season I'd invite my buddies over for a hog leg feast. I'd grill them with A-1 sauce, a small strip of bacon on each leg, basil, and garlic. They weren't half bad if you had a few beers first, correction - several beers. My buddies got a real charge over my hog feast but I think the real reason they showed up was for the free beer. Of course my wife disappeared to her mother's place during these feasts.

During one of my annual feasts my neighbor wandered over and asked what I was cooking. PA chicken was my answer. He asked if he could try some, sure I said. He took several bits then gave me a funny look and said "what the hell is this stuff." My buddy who was half lit said, "It's groundhog." My non hunting neighbor puked all over my patio and didn't talk to me for months.
