200g Hybrid how far off Lands

Anyone shooting this bullet in 29-32 inch barrels for ftr with .308 brass ifso could you give measurement with how far off lands works best for 1000-1200y with your varget Loads, thanks.

I shoot for .015 off when the barrel is fresh and never adjust seating depth after that. So, it ends up being used with anywhere from .015 to .120+ off during the life of the barrel. I monitor the muzzle velocity and add powder as needed to maintain this velocity as the barrel/throat wears. Some of my best groups have occurred at the end of the barrel life when it is jumping a lot. So, I don't think it matters that much with hybrids.

Scott - interested in what your barrel life was shooting this bullet for FTR. I know it will be an approximation but just interested in an approximate number.

10-13 thou has been what I've found for the last couple barrels... H4895 in the last one (30" Krieger) for 2660 fps, Varget in the current one (32" Barlein) for 2710 fps. Next one @ the 'smith is a 28" Bartlein... probably going to use Varget for it as well. Got plenty of both ;)

Thanks for replies guys 10 thou off seems to be good starting point for me to work up Load with my 1 in 10 twist 29in Bartlein.

paulT,
The Sinclair FT-R team uses the Berger 200 grain Hybrid with great success using a 30 inch barrel. The Hybrid target bullets are very tolerant of jump so I suggest starting at .015 off and working back towards the cartridge case in .005 increments. .010 should be fine as a starting point also if you wish. Do the seating depth testing using the lowest powder charge listed for the bullet/powder/cartridge combination you are testing. Once the seating depth accuracy node is found. Work the load back up checking for pressure signs and accuracy until your highest velocity accuracy node is found. Also do not use the under size .229/.3065 bore! Stay with the standard .300/.308 1-10 twist. You can use our BALLISTIC CALCULATOR here :
http://www.bergerbullets.com/ballistics/ to see what muzzle velocity you need to have the bullet super sonic at the ranges you want to shoot out too.

Assuming you really mean .299"/.3065", why not? Every barrel I own is .299"/.308" and there doesn't seem to be any problem with any Berger bullets I've used. That's not exactly the same as .3065", which I've never even heard of, but .299" lands don't seem to be any problem at all. Many Palma rifles use .298" lands with Berger 155s. Just curious exactly what the issue would be with a slightly tighter land configuration.

I'm going to venture guess that the tight bore with the heavies and Varget-ish speed powders gets you to higher pressure for a given velocity than a 300 bore. I think the whole point of tight bores with 155s in the Full Bore guns is to keep the pressure up long enough before the light pill vacates the tube.

As I understand it, the reason the .298/.308 bore evolved had to do with a particular 155 gr bullet that was widely used in the UK, which was slightly undersized (diameter). I routinely shoot several Berger bullets, including 168 and 185 Hybrids, from .299/.308 barrels with no issues. Frank from Bartlein has posted results elsewhere of tests using both .299 and .300 bore barrels. As I recall, there was little difference between the two. However, I can imagine a much longer bearing surface such as in the 200 Hybrid might affect that dramatically, which is why I asked for Phil to respond.
