20 Vartarg 40 grain v max with Rl-10x.

I am trying to determine what a good starting load for the 40 grain v-max with RL-10x would be. I have Todd Kindler's book. He lists loads of 18.0, 18.6,19.2 and 19.7 grains in that combination. I think the general rule of thumb is to reduce loads by 10 %. So does that mean I should reduce the starting load of 18 grains to 16.2 or just start at 18 grains since 10% of 19.7 would be 17.7? I am just playing around on paper at the moment at 100 yards so velocity doesn't matter right now. 1-11 twist criterion barrel on a savage action. Thanks.

+1 Ref. Phil's recommendation. Searched on saubier.com and found one post with one shooting 18.0 gr of RL 10X with 32 gr. bullets in a 20 Vartarg. Believe I would start in the 16 to 17 grain range if using 40 gr. bullets.

I plan on going with 16.2 grains to start out with and work my way up. I talked to Todd about 39 grain sierra blitzkings with RL-7 and H4198, he cautioned me to start low and come up. I just forgot to ask about Rl-10x.

Todd's loads scare me

he was known to push the limits and coat his bullets with SPL

if you have a chrono.... start very LOW and see what the velocities read, pay attn. to brass for pressure signs

What ever cartridge you are loading.
Load one of each powder charge from low working up.
I load three at a time and shoot. You can watch for pressure.

If you reach pressure you only have two to pull.

Once you get a max pressure load go back 1.5 grains and load three each at .3 grain increments and do your powder test.

I have found it better to fire form a few cases rather than blow primer pockets of a case of two.
