Looking at buying one of the 20 cals. in a cooper rifle. Interested in accuracy over speed. Can any of you give some opinions on these calibers.

For just accuracy ??? I don't know..maybe you should be looking at the 20 BR ...The choice of components is getting better as we go So I would ask my favorite gunsmith or barrel guy which he has had the best luck with...The choice of barrels, grooves, rate of twist etc..& the wide choice of bullets & powders all need to be considered..If you are looking for an off the shelf rifle thats differant...lots of Ruger 204's to consider & choose from the vartarg I think you will be building..the tac 20 is available thru dakota..but you get the twist & chamber they spec..If you build it the options become wider & more useful to the bullet you want to use...So if accuracy alone is the primary consideration...you should take some time before jumping into this 5mm game...The cost of putting a barrel on your action is not cheap say 600 but you get the options you want so it is going to be suited to your needs...Cooper arms does a tac 20 also & the cost is similar to re-barreling a remington ...They are nice guns..I think worth the money from what I've seen...Do you have a small bolt face short action you can rebarrel ?? or a standard bolt face to make up into a 20 BR...Converting the bolt face costs Xtra $$$ so that may make choosing one or the other more viable...Tell us more...about the bullet you like & what you want to pay to get real accuracy ...say .25 or better ?? or you looking for world class under .10 of an inch...No so simple is it ?? mike in ct

I like to 20VT for the low recoil and small powder charge. Only 18.2 grs for mine and I get 3600 fps at a mild load. My 20VT has been the easiest rifle to develope a load for and the accuracy cant be beat. My first day out with the rifle I got a chuck at 299yds. I broke the barrel in for a few rounds and off to the field. My friend has a 20PPC whick shoots the smallest groups I have ever seen but the hits arent any different from mine. Alot more powder is used in the PPC.

Light bullets,< 35 grains) with a low,er) report, less powder and more shots before your barrel gets too hot: 20 VarTarg.

Heavy bullets,> 35 grains): 20 PPC or 20 Tac.

Best of all: just order one of each.

The only downside of the Vartarg is the brass. Snoop around the forum on Saubier for some discussions on all of the above.

If you want the straight scoop call Todd Kindler at The Woodchuck Den. Todd developed all three of these and ask his opinion. I have two 20 Tac and am building a 20 VT. Brass has not been a problem. Todd can be reached at 330-897-0614.
