20 tac vs 204 ruger

i just picked up a Remington 700 VSSF II in 204 Ruger. I haven't shot it yet as I still have to scope it but looking forward to shooting this little rifle.

I just went to my local store where family works and can get discounts and 2 used 20 tacs just showed up. First is a cooper 21 Montana varminter which I have always wanted one in a 204 Ruger but in the 51. This rifle will be used for hunting mainly and I wasn't too keen on a single shot for hunting varmints. The second one is a Remington 700 with a custom barrel (not known, put together by an unknown guy). The only thing I do know is the rifle is clean, barrel is mint, work looks good, stock is rough, they fluted bolt. The area it came from it could only be 2 different gunsmiths and one is incredible and the other is new but so far pretty talented. This rifle is super cheap.

My question is do I sell or trade in my 204. Ruger for one of the 20 tacs or stick with that I got?

The 204 has just a little better performance than the tac 20, but not enough to matter in the field. With the 204 you can buy new ammo most anywhere, but with the tac 20 you have to load your own. If you could shoot the tac 20`s and one of them shot a lot better I would go for it, but if the 204 is a good shooter keep it.

Velocity will depend on barrels. In some cases the 20 Tac will outrun the 204. The Cooper will shoot better than the VSSF. The Remington 20 Tac may do so as well, it would depend on the barrel and gunsmith. I have had both 204s and 20 Tacs Currently have a 204 and 20 Prac). I give a slight advantage to the 20 Tac due to brass. The only decent brass for the 204 is Nosler and it isn't great. You can get Lapua 223 for the Tac as well as good military such as LC and IMI. Forming is no big deal and a one time event. Once you neck it down the fire form loads will be about the same a formed brass. If I were choosing one, it would probably be the Cooper. If you can afford more than one then you can make the comparisons and next time somebody asks you can share your experience. One thing about it, the prairie dogs won't know the difference.

If you like the Cooper 21 in Tac 20 Buy It, Shoot Both..Sell the one you can live W/out...If the twist rates are similar...The 39 or 40 grain bullet will be the limiting factor for both rifles...I think [my experience] about 500 meters using those weight bullets..I use the Tac 20 w 39 Gr Sierra in My Sako Varmint Pac-Nor Barreled Rifle..I've had mine about ten years now..My Buddy shoots Berger 40 grain out of his 204..It is really a toss up..The Gun That shoots best Either Caliber is the Keeper...Mike In Ct

I will wait and see what the price is on the cooper as I have wanted a cooper for some time. I just don't like the idea of a single shot for hunting.

The Remington won't be for sale as soon so if I pass on the cooper I'll wait and take another look st the Remington. As far as I know it's going be pretty cheap.

Single shots are what I shoot almost exclusively, varmints-deer-everything, and I have never missed that second shot. Cooper Varminters, Dakota Predators/ Varminters. All single shots and really accurate. You really only get ONE good shot.

Turns out the Remington 20 tac is to hot of a deal with a sightron scope, the rifle itself and a box a brass that I couldn't say no. So turns out it looks like I'm going to be owning both. The Remington is a 700 blueprinted flute bolt action, bartlien barrel, bedded into a VLS stock, sightron SII 6-24x42 target dot, and over 100 pieces of Dakota arms brass (lapua). Best part is I got to take it home this weekend to shoot it and see if it makes a good addition to my collections. Turns out she shoots, and shoots well and looks damn fine in my cabinet. A 3 round .502" outside to outside or .298" group at 100 yards. So it looks like I'll be buying her
