20 Practical loading

I am in the construction of my first custom rifle and just recently received all that I need for the 20 practical that I am building. As I make up a few test rounds, I'm running into a few question on sizing the brass. I have a redding .223 type S full length bushing die. When changing to the .233 bushing into the sizing die, do I need to replace the decaping rod assembly with a .204 decaping rod? Is there anyway around it if I don't have a .204 decaping rod?

Thanks,
Newbie Gun Builder

As far as I know you need the 204 decapping rod. They can be bought separately .
Redding part #14206,
This is where I got mine.

If you are using military brass some have a small flashole so you will need undersized decapping pins too.

You will need the .204 decapping rod. Check this site for a lot more info on the .20 P.

You need a 20 cal decap rod assy. with a 20 Practical using the .223 Redding Type S Fl Die.

Try 24 gr of N133 with a 32 gr Sierra Bltzking about .010" off the lands. I have test fired a lot of 20 Practical rifles with that load and it's a "bug hole" load - always shoots well, always accurate, etc..

+1 & try the 32 Vmax with the same load. I had good luck with my 1-11 PacNor boltgun and 40Vmax with N133. Best group, 5 at a 100 below but most are a little larger, 3/8 to 1/2 but the groundhogs aren't carrying calipers. :D

rcw3 and hog patrol,

I have some 32 gr Hornady vmax and 39 gr Sierra bltzking that I'm eager to try. I wouldn't mind getting my hands on some 33gr but probably won't find any.. Still deciding on barrel length, I'm thinking 22" or 24" I'd like to keep it shorter with intentions of a suppressor.

Any thoughts on moly coating my bullets??

25gr benchmark and 23.7gr r10x behind 39gr sierras used to shoot real nice for me. Was a brilliant round for foxes.

22" if suppressed & no experience with molys.

I shoot 6-7k in my .223s just on p-dogs & moly coat those due to the amount of rounds.
I would look at the HBN coating over moly these days though.

Don't rule out the 34 gr.varment nightmares from midsouth they shoot pretty good in my 20 prac. behind 25.8 grs. of AA2230 especially for the price. I get about .5" or less at 100yds. when I do my part.

I'll second the 34g VNE/Dogtown for a cheap high volume slug. Easy to get to 4000 FPS, good terminal performance, no BC, in fact I think they have a negative BC ;), but work well, flat out to 350ish yds, then drop like a rock and get blown like a tumbleweed.

24 gr. N133, Sierra 32 gr BlitzKing, BR-4 primer, .010" off the lands - the load has shot very well in a wide variety of 20 Practical rifles.
