.20 cal. Remington conversion

I would love a light carry weight full out 20 Tactical for Coyotes, Foxes, and Groundhogs,I'm in North Carolina) built with a repeater Bat action,if they make a repeater), a Lilja 24 inch 3 or 4 contour barrel and a MacMillan or Lone Wolf stock, but that would be at least $2500.00 done right, so I thought about buying one of these new lightweight Remington's in stainless steel, black varmint carry/bench stocks,I think it is model LV SS) and get it in .204 Ruger and then all I would have to do is rechamber to Tac 20 right? to have the same basic thing. Then I could true action and replace barrel & stock over time and could get close to my dream rig without too much wallet damage. What do people thing of this way of going about it? I wish so bad that Cooper or the new Dakota were repeaters, but such is life. I could not afford the Dakota, but the Copper is very possible, they even chamber the Tac 20) Maybe Ruger .204 is not enough to worry about different from the Tac 20 to justify the money---but a hard working guy deserves what he wants, right! Anyway, any input would be big help. I also want to know if I bought the Remington in .17 Rem. could I still use it for Tac 20 with the addition of new barrel?
Thanks in advance

Hi Steve,

That's exactly what I did. I bought a Remington 700 ADL in 223 Remington and put a Lilja barrel on it and it is my most accurate centerfire rifle,so far, I have a BAT 6PPC in the making). I must state that I have the action trued, put on a varmint barrel, a jewel trigger, and a McMillan stock. I didn't want to lead you into believing that a rechambered, but otherwise stock ADL was my most accurate rifle. IN hindsight, I could have bought a Cooper for less than the total I paid, but this rifle is exactly setup the way I want with no compromises.

Cooper does chamber Tac-20 and 204 Ruger, but only in a Single Shot action.

Kory,
Does Bat make a lightweight repeater action suitable for the Tac 20 and if so, how much? Does the Remington 700 magazine allow 39 grain SBTail's to be loaded in the mag or is now a "single shot" ?

Steve,
BAT does make 2 repeaters, the Model RS and RL. The RS weights 29 ozs and the RL weights 31 ozs.

Steve,

I went single shot, don't know why, but I did. So I can't answer your question. My guess is yes, it will work, but not 100% sure.

SnakeEye,
Thanks for the comeback. Those actions really seem the way to go if you know what you want. I could really enjoy enjoy spending money I don't have tricking out a Tac 20 on a Bat action just to start. You are in hunting heaven. My cousin has a big beef farm about 15 miles SW of Lexington and the abundance of quality and quality of game up in Rockbridge county is phenomenal.

The Cooper was my first thought for a little walk around gun in Tac 20..I've been playing with the idea of a Savage Tactical w/adjustable stock getting the 223 with a muzzle brake & adding a tac 20 extra barrel ..I'm not sure if I would stop & do the conversion while out in the field..& I really want to have 4 guns with me on a Prairie dog hunt..the 6mmbr, my 22-250, a 223 to take care of the light work [or my 222 rem varmint] plus the the tac 20 as a diversion kind of idiot stick...I'd like to hear more on your thoughts about this caliber & project.. what is the effective range with 32 grain bullets?? about 250yds???..mike in ct

Mike,

I know of shooters that routinely go out to 500 yards with the 32 grain Tac-20. I know a couple that have shoot to around 600 yards. What really matters is wind, being that the bullet it 32 grains. Realistictly, I think its probably a good 400 yard cartridge.
