20 Cal guys----twist rate

I have 3 20 cal rifles all with 12 twist barrels. One is a Shilen barrel, one Kreiger and one factory barrel on an XR 100 I picked up last year. All 12 twists and all shoot 32 ,35 , 39 and 40 grain bullets very well. Maybe that post about altitude is true since I am at 4700 ft here in Colorado. My next barrel will be another 12 twist Krieger. Why mess with success?

I have a tc venture predator 204 ruger 1@10. I love that gun. I have shot 34gr 35gr 39 and 40gr Berger. My gun like them all. I would like to try some 45gr. Just too see how they shoot out of it.

I have two 26" tubes in 1-12" (Hart) and both shoot the 39 Sierras, 32 and 40 V-Max without any problems, including high altitude (6,500 ft). My buddies also shoot other barrels with 1-12" with same bullets and no problems.

I spoke to Hornady tech support yesterday. I asked them what twist I should order on a custom barrel for a 204 Ruger that would be using their 40 gr bullets.

I was told to get an 11" if my barrel maker offered it and if i couldn't get an 11", get a 10".

My Pac Nor 20 cals were all 12T.....40 V's worked fine

Either the VT or PT.....then I built a 20 BR back when....9T P-N for 55's

Got bored after 1200 rds......sent it back to P-N to rechamber to 20-222

Wow...the thing is a lazer still to this day...prob my favorite rig in my p/dog set ups

Remember its an 18# rifle...Savage target action...25.5" full cylinder tube...Choate stock

My idea is its better to over twist than under..if the bullet will stay together..40 V works great

Keeping track of rds fired in this barrel as I reload it..probably at +5K right now

Elevation ? right at 6000'

I would get a 10 twist. Definitely no slower than a 11 twist. I am at 900’ altitude. My 12 twist-shoots Berger 35 gr flat-base exceptionally well in a Vartarg. Everything else is mediocre.

I’ve had 2 204’s and a 20 tac. Both 204’s were 12 twist and the 20 tac is 11. The one 204 would shoot the 39 and the other wouldn’t no matter what I’d do. The 11 is the better way to go

Nice group for sure.
No one said a 12 WOULDN'T shoot heavier, just that some don't so why roll the dice? We have all read the yays and nays to know that some won't.

Went 11 only because I am considering shooting 45s also. 20 PPC in progress with 39 or 40gr @3900ish for use on coyotes. My theory on all the splash articles is they are being over spun. May be wrong. Have shot many yotes with a 40gr .224 and no splashing so im going with a gut call.

If I was not going to possibly try 45s I would have went 12. For a 204R prolly 11. For a vartarg prolly 10 and all considering 39 or 40gr bullets

I went with a Hart 26" 9 twist HV for my 20VT and shoot the 55gn bergers here in Colorado at 5000-6000ft. Works great at 3200fps. I can push all the way to 3400fps if I want to throw away brass after a single firing and deal with heavy bolt lift.
