20 cal Cleaning stuff.

What's everyone using and recommend? I am frustrated cleaning y 204. Or trying to clean it. I live in Podunk Wyoming and not much choice here.. Looking at the Bore Tech Prof Positive rods and stuff.. I already broke a carbon fiber rod a few years ago. Help an old guy out.

I use a SS rod I bought on line, I also live at the end of the earth and pretty much order everything online from Amazon or Graf's

Pro-shot makes a good rod IMO. I use 'em on all my CF's, including a 204R & 20P, with a mix of brass & tipton jags. I've found them at Rural King (a combo of Tractor Supply & Walmart), or most online places have 'em as well. I use a 1" patch IIRC for my 20's. I use a Dewey bore guide, they make several different sizes, but the one I use fits the 20's and 22 cal's just fine.

I just got a proof positive 20 cal and tips, brushes from Brownells. I have not used it but besides the handle material being a little less sturdy looking than a dewey, I like it and think it will be just as good as all my Dewey rods. FWIW

Not to steal the post....but who makes a good "universal" bore guide for 20? No one is going to have a match to my action...

Mike Lucas bore guides
Montana Extreme coated rods
Mike Lucas makes top notch bore guides. I have a few and they are as good as it gets. Not to long ago I bought a PMA Tool bore guide and it seems to be a top notch piece as well.

I only have one Montana Extreme rod, my others are Dewey, but if I was starting all over they all would be Montana Extreme rods.

+1 for Tipton. They make a great jag set that covers pretty much everything and their carbon fiber cleaning rods are great. Make them nice and long for rear entry. I have Dewey rods as well but when I need a new rod I buy Tipton. They’ve come a long ways. Not the junk they used to be back in the day.

I’ve been shooting 20 cals since the debut of the 204 Ruger 15 years ago.
For patches I use Pro Shot and they work very well for me. But if using other brands or sizes, the best tip is to cut patches at different sizes and also try 17 cal jags until you get just the right fit.

For brushes I prefer Montana Extreme brand because they last longer and their nylon brushes are way more rigid than any other brush out there.

I mostly prefer the Pro Shot stainless steel rods. Typically I use the Tipton jags, but I vary that some. For my 17's, 20's, and 224's, I use the rimfire 7/8 patches. BUT that said, I actually use 3 different manufacturers since the thickness varies between them. I use the patch that fits the jag and the bore correctly. Not too tight and bend the rod, and not too loose and not clean.

I have a few Tipton CF rods, but not that impressed with them. I'll include a picture of a Tipton 17 cal rod I received and had to return.

I've been most impressed recently with the Montana X-treme rods. Coated spring steel rods. Would go with them if I was starting over today. Got a bunch of Dewey's also, again not that impressed.
