20 Cal., 55-62g VLD, Don Unmussig Bullet Accuracy

I am looking for someone that has tried these bullets at Long Range, as in 5-600 yards. I am looking at playing with these at IBS 600 yard competition if they will give benchrest accuracy. I like the challenge of trying different things. I have a 1-8tw Douglass SS Match barrel in LV contour to finish about 26 in. I have a reamer on the way from PTG in 20 PPC, no turn. I understand Don Unmussig makes a very high BC, long, VLD that is @62g. And has @.500 BC. This is the bullet I am mainly interested in. And if anyone has experience with his 55-57g VLD, I would like to hear that also. To be competitive at 600 yards I look for groups to be 0.8- 1.25 inches at 500 yards shot off a concrete bench at my home range. I am mainly building this rifle for a varmint rifle, but am going to put the barrel initially on one of my BAT's with a BR stock and just see if it can shoot with the 6BR or Improveds BR's. I tried the 57gr in a 20BR with 1x8. Nothing consistent though. Don't think the bullets were the issue as much as 1x8 twist. I switched to a pacnor supermatch 1x9 in a 20-250 and problem fixed. Not sure if this helps. Scott

Scott, thanks! Good info. I had heard the same thing before with the 55-57 grainers. I did not think the 9tw would stabilize Don's 62 grainer. They are suppose to be a lot longer than the 55-57g. I actually bought a 8 and 9 tw Douglas to try. I am going to try the 8tw 1st. Bad thing is: the 62g Don makes is the only bullet I know of you probably need a 8 twist for! Samuel Hall

wow, if you can get this to work, a .20 in competition would be crazy. what do you suppose the barrel life will be?

I tried the 62's in my 8t 20br xp100 the other day. It was cold, in the low 20's. They didn't make round holes. Its a short barrel at 17"

The little 20-250 heats up quick despite 1.250 x 28 inch tube. Lots of powder for such a little bullet. Mine cruises at 3850fps. I've only shot it out to 850 yards so far, I'm sure a 1000 wouldn't be an issue. Probably not a good candidate for benchrest (plenty of better cartridges) but fun nonetheless. It's not that its not accurate, just not practical.

did you wonder why?

For those of us with 9 twists, mine a BR, Mr Unmussig suggested the 50 gr and when I asked, he said .440 BC. Sounds like fun for my club's midrange 500 yd F Class.

Old thread, but how did your testing go? Thanks Kevin Lepine

I have a 20 BRA and a 20 Dasher that I plan on bringing to the Piedmont range to shoot in light gun class to try at least once during the 2024 season. The way I see it nothing ventured nothing gained, if I get a screamer I will be happy.
