20 Beggs

Yep :D

Picked up my HART chambered barrel from Don Geraci, gunsmith) last weekend.

As soon as I get some time, it's off to the range for barrel break-in and group shooting.

My rifle was built as a live varmint gun to shoot coyotes, crows, and jackrabbits.

load data provided to me by a friend who also shoots the 20 Beggs

25.2 grs N133 under a 40 gr Berger at 4100 fps.
26.0 grs N133 under a 35 gr Berger at 4350 fps.

What barrel and twist did you decide to put on that great looking gun? Anxious to see how it performs. What a great idea from Gene, 220 Russian, neck to 20, go shoot at 4,000+ fps with BR accuracy.

Keep us informed as I'm going to convert one of my Panda bench 6ppcs to this. Hung up right now on twist rate. 1:9 or 1:12

Gary, Bob, and others

thx for the inquiry as here is the skinny on the 20 Beggs. All credit goes to Gene who came up with the design and modifications to the 220 Russian case. Dave Kiff @ PTG has reamers in stock, and Hornady and Gene have FL bushing dies in stock,$105 delivered TYD) . The 22 and 6mm Beggs have already proven successful in benchrest shooting matches.,plenty of info on the Beggs over on benchrestcentral.com)

For bullet seating, I use a Wilson 20ppc BS which I already had.

the 20 Beggs case has the same powder capacity as a 20 PPC -.100" short with no case prep needed. Just neck down a 220 Russian to 20 then load and shoot. the 20 Beggs has the same radius as a PPC case, is just as accurate as the fireformed PPC case, and has little to no case stretch. You can decide between a no-neck turn, or a light neck turn chamber. My necks are lightly turned just to clean up neck walls after reducing from 22 to 20 caliber. My chamber has a .231" neck as necks are turned to .0125". Loaded round mics .229"

There are approx. 4-5 20 Beggs floating around as my good friend Ken Ekstrand in San Antonio helped me with his load data I posted above. Ken went with a 1:10" twist Shilen 26" barrel in a LV contour.

I went with a 1:12" HART since I only plan to shoot the 40 Bergers and 39 Sierras. I did not need a faster twist barrel since I won't be shooting anything heavier than 40 grs. A 1:9" will also work as you can call any of the custom barrel makers to ask there opinions on your intended set up.

I have custom rifles with Stolle Panda, Kodiak, and Grizzly II actions as my 20 Beggs barrel can be swapped between any of my 3 stocked actions. I can do load development on the Panda action LV BR rifle, then thread the 20 Beggs onto my Kodiak or Grizzly II for varmint/predator eradication :D

IMHO - the best things about the Beggs case are.... Lapua brass, N133 powder, Berger bullets, very minimal case prep, and super accurate. The Lapua brass should last being fired over 40 times each !

feel free to ask me any other questions or PM if you need more assistance.

Blake, is my mentor as well:)

I have one in the works to use on groundhogs. I'm using stuff I have lying around, Rem SA 700 w PTG ppc bolt, Douglas s/s 1-12" #6 barrel. PTG is regrinding my 65Grendel reamer to 20 Beggs with a .232 neck. I debated long and hard about whether to set reamer up as a lw varmint bullet only or for target use too, as I have some nice 44&48gr FB bullets. I really want to just shoot 32 grain bullets and below, using an ultra slow twist barrel, but my head is telling me otherwise. Although, I think if I didn't already have the Douglas barrel,I would have gotten a 1-16" twist barrel from Pac Nor. If I this works out a may built a bench gun around a 1-11" Bartlein and 44 & 48 grain FB bullets.

For a seater I'm also using a Wilson 20PPC and also the seater from my .175 short 20PPC . Gene's sizing die is 106.60 shipped.

Case prep-I'm getting a nice 100% cleanup at .2305, at around .2318 was 50% or so cleanup.

Cajun Blake,

Great information. I too am putting it on a switch barrel Panda and going with a 1:12 twist. I'll see if I can find a reamer Monday. Please keep me posted after you get to the range. Question is: where do you get a 20ppc Wilson bullet seater. I've looked around and can't see any listed on the various web sites.

thanks
Bob

been looking for a new 20cal project i have a tact 20 at the minute but want something differant i did look at a 20ppc but the beggs looks easier to sort i have a good rifle builder here in the uk who can put the project together so more info is invaluable.
thanks

All this info is fine and good but how does it shoot. thats the bottom line for me. Anyone??? How does the 20beggs shoot? I want to see some groups. I am thinking about a 20-222 but maybe the 20 beggs is a better choice? I hate to buy an action to have a .223 bolt face, when i already have several for the ppc bolt face. I want the most inherently accurate case though and if the 20-222 has the edge then i will buy an action and not even think twice about it. whats the scoop! Lee

Re: 20 Beggs resurrected

I know... it's an old post but it's the one that I've come back to for over a year, I finally have something to add.

I finally got some range time with my new .20 Beggs. I am running low on H335 so I worked up a load with Viht N133. I load test at 200 yards. Batt action and Hart barrel. I went with 1:9 but I kind of wish I had gone with a little higher rate of twist for the Berger 55's that I have a pile of. Since it's shooting sub-1/4 moa groups at 200 I might not need any faster.

The first load test (weeks ago), not shown, was done from 24 to 25.9 in .5 gr increments. 25.4 and 25.9 were too hot (down here). 24.9 was the sweet spot. The next load test (today) was from 24.7 to 25.1 in 0.1gr increments. At the longest point of the bullet impact from the 25.0 gr load, the out to out dimension was 0.430 or in other words sub 1/4 MOA. The only thing that bugs me is how sensitive it is to the powder charge. What is it going to do when it’s warmer or colder? etc...

Next go-around I'll take the chronograph with me and see what the SDEV is.
