20" 6br velocity

Hi all,

Considering putting together a 20" 6br "truck gun" for ease of handling and don't need the noise or performance of a bigger 6mm. Plan on running 75-90gr bullets. Likely 87v max or 88 Berger.

In in a rem / tikka / howa factory action what sort of velocity should I expect tuning hogdon powders?

Approximately how much faster would a dasher be? 150fps?

I can't speak for the BR but I just started working with the 6 Dasher in a 20" barrel. I was concerned I would not be happy with the velocity but it's not quite as bad as i thought. Up until this barrel, I have very little experience with bullets less than the 105 class over a chronograph. I have always used the lighter bullets for hunting and never had a chronograph to check speed.
I went with a Bartlein carbon barrel 7.5 twist because that is all i could find. The intent was to make a lighter weight rifle for my kids to enjoy hunting. I typically chase accuracy but have not fully tested tuning loads in this barrel. I have been more intrigued learning speeds on these shorter barrels. I think my next just for the heck of it project will be to cut an older steel barrel down 1-2" at a time from 20" to 16.5" to see the difference there.

I only have about 40 rounds on the barrel (hoping it speeds up a little more). I am testing the 70gr and 80gr Nosler ballistic tips at the moment.
I chose cci450 primers. Lapua brass and xbr8208
70gr I stopped at 3400. (this was on day one testing and i feel like i can get more even if i needed to switch powders)
80gr I settled on 3280 (1/2 grain increments in powder was roughly 50fps on my barrel). i did get the 80s to 3381fps but had heavy bolt lift. 3336 would probably work but i backed down 1/2gr.

These rounds were shot over a garmin and new labradar.

Next I will try and test the Berger 87vld and 88 HPFB varmint

Hopefully this helps with your decisions or thoughts around a Dasher vs a BR

I have a 22" 6BR hunting rifle with a 7-1/2 twist barrel.
3200fps with 70grn Nosler Ballistic Tip bullets with 32.0grn of IMR 8208XBR
2991fps with 80grn Hornady ELD-VT bullets with 30.0grn of IMR 8208XBR
2871fps with Lapua Factory Ammo 90grn Scenar-L bullets

For the 6 BR in a 20 inch barrel, lighter bullets and faster burning powders will be most efficient. Note that heavier bullets requiring slower powders and longer barrels to perform efficiently may not be an option. Then there's the blocky shoulder of the BRA and the Dasher not the best options for a repeater magazine. It it's velocity and great accuracy you want go to 6mm Creed or 6GT.

So maybe depending on the barrel and powder somewhere around 3050 for a 87gr and 3150 for a 75gr in a straight 6br?
I believe you are right in the ball park with those velocities. In my 6br using the 75 gr V-max and 31.5 grs of AR-Comp I get 3349 ft/sec from my 26" tube. When I input all my specs in QL they estimate the velocity at 3355 ft/sec. Very close to what I am getting. Changing the barrel length in QL from 26" to 20" they estimate the velocity to be 3186 ft/sec. Very close to your estimate of 3150 ft/sec.

That's good to know!

Interestingly the Berger 87gr vld hunting has very similar BC to the .30 cal 155 VLD.

A 30" tube would get the 155gr to 3050 in a 308 but the 87gr in a little 20" br would still be neck and neck at 1000

I wanted to add that I’ve found the 88 to be a poor coyote and Varmint bullet, but it shoots well and is decent on deer.

I’d look at the 87 VLD.
What did you not like about the 88s on coyotes?
Too explosive or not enough? They run too far? I was interested in shooting some on coyotes but may skip to the 87s first based on your comment.

Lots of small exits and lots of them ran after the shot, and all that from a 24” GT and a hot load.

Definitely do the 87 Berger or some 80 grain Bart’s if you can find them.

The 87 GR VLD is an excellent bullet. I've used it for over 15 years in a variety of 6MM cartridges from the 6 BRA to the 6 GT and 6X47 Lapua. I've taken Deer, Bear, Bobcats and only one Coyote, Everything that I have shot with it dropped right there except one Bear went about 15 yards. On Bobcats and Coyote it leaves an exit about the size of a nickel and they are dead before they hit the ground. High BC , flat shooting , easy to tune and extremely accurate.. It is my all-time favorite bullet for that size game...10" twist or 9" twist will give the best accuracy but a 9" twist will produce the maximum BC ...

I'm really looking for palm size holes. I've tried 58 blitzkings and 60gr HP varminter and they are ok but seem to splash at close range. Maybe the 87gr v max would be better than the Berger for what I want
