20-250 Savage Impulse

Decided to build a 20-250 Impulse predator, as I wanted a .20 cal straight pull rifle to go along with my enhanced .243 Impulse predator rifle.
Since I have a turn bolt .20 cal rifle as a backup, I wasn't in a hurry to complete the job, but I cobbled the parts together and bought a large shank barrel from a fellow member here with the intention of having it contoured and rethreaded with small shank tenon threads to fit my Impulse small shank QC barrel kit, as Savage isn't selling the parts I need for the build.
I ended up bartering for a large shank barrel extension and recoil lug, so my build was progressing faster than I expected.
Acquired a stainless large shank barrel nut and I had all the parts needed to get it done, or so I thought.
It ends up that the large shank barrel tenon threads are shorter than the small shank tenon threads, so I couldn't get correct headspace.
I ordered the correct Die, threaded it longer, assembled, formed brass, set headspace, loaded dummy rounds and adjusted the two 5 rd AI magazines for reliable feeding.
The heavy barreled action fit into the stock very snug without any stock modifications.
It's not free floated by any measure and with a barrel that heavy and long, I don't think it'll effect accuracy.
Going to load some 55 bergers with H4350, mount the X50, sight it in and maybe get some feedback from a couple of coyote this weekend.

It is a rare bird for sure!

Straight pull actions are not common here in general. You see more of them in the north of Europe.

Many of those are in the hands of folks who can really shoot them very well and they prefer them to semiautomatics. I got to try a few and was very impressed with their guns and even more impressed with their shooting skill level.

I was intrigued when Savage came out with these, but was baffled when they didn't offer them in 223?

In terms of a rig that runs the Berger 20 cal 55, and being a straight pull, I doubt you will see another one at the range any time soon.

Good Luck with the new rig! In for the range report!

That’s gonna be a nasty combo for coyotes!
Since I built the 20-250, my coyote hunting has been dismal.
Missed a 40 yard open field shot and then haven't see anything but fox for two weeks, until last night, when I saw a gimpy yote in the woods, but couldn't get a shot at it.
Tracks all over the fields, but no dogs seen and I've been hunting all different hours and have cell cams at several properties on bait piles.
Is the 20-250 caliber's reputation so deadly, that when the coyote heard I had a 20-250 rifle, their staying away ?

Very interesting cartridge, this from an avid wildcatter. Love the .250 Savage cartridge and the straight pull action is pretty cool.
