20'-23' barrel for short range???

I just read on one of the pages here that for short range only with the 6br that the suggested barrel length would be 20"-23".
Wht so short? I just ordered a 30" pac-nor 14 twist for short range home targets. May-be that wasn't such a good choice. I'm new to this level of accuracy thing, so tell me, "why so short"?? Thanks tootalloutdoors

Generally speaking, the only extra barrel length is good for comes with higher capacity cartridges, so there is more burn time down the barrel. For short range work, smallish capacity cartridges, extra barrel length isn't needed. In fact, you may well find a shorter barrel shoots better since it doesn't have as much harmonic influence.

I had a retired BR bbl chambered in 6 BR in 13 twist that I shot ground squirrels and p.dogs with using 60g bullets at 3500 fps. A friend had the same outfit with a 26" light varmint contour that he shot the 60's at 3700 fps using AA2230.

There is a wife's tale that the Magic length of a barrel for the perfect accuracy is 22-23".

If you are going to be involved in informal Bench shooting and varmint shooting, the there is nothing wrong with having your barrel 27"-28" long. The extra length does reduce muzzle climb and get the noise away from your head.

If you do get a 28" barrel, you will have unreal velocities.

Good luck!
