20-222 Build

Guys,
I have decided to build a 20-222 ground squirrel rifle. I think I have read all the 20-222 & 20 VarTarg stuff I could find and thought I would have Benchmark slap a new 22" barrel on a donor Tikka t3 222 action but they don't have a reamer. I have read posts with Hart and Pac Nor barrels but have no experience with either of those companies or which reamer to use. I have lots of Lapua .222 brass, small rifle primers, IMR 4198, Varget, and a lot of 32 and 40 grn Vmax 204 bullets. So I just need to sort out the barrel situation. Comments and suggestions from the shooting gallery would be appreciated at this point.
Thanks

You can't go wrong with either one, I would go with which ever one had zero free bore.
If you wanna no turn neck on Lapua brass you better go with a .235 nk, if not a .232 nk will work with just about everything else

Good point I forget about the thicker brass. I was just looking at PTG reamers and they have a 20-222 Remington reamer but it doesn't list the spec's other than to call a sales tech for questions. I will have to do some calling tomorrow I was hoping someone already has the reamers saving the expense of buying my own.

I’ve been wanting to build one myself for the same reason, lots of Lapua 222 brass and I’ve been intrigued for a long time. I’ll be watching with interest. If anybody have experience with 20-222 and has a good reamer print would be helpful or add any thoughts or insights you may have. I’ll probably order a reamer from JGS, they’ve done me right in the last past.

Good luck cclfn, fun project!

Pacific Tool & Gage (PTG) has one and the print is listed on here from an old 20-222 thread from back in 2006. It has a 232 neck though and with the Lapua brass that may be an issue.

I’m gonna JGS in the morning, I’ll let you know what they say. They may have one.

FYI this is the old thread that has the PTG Diagram attached;

20-222 Wildcat need some help with Reamer design

There are some words and reamer drawings in the book called "Terrific Twenties" by Kindler et al from Small Caliber News fame.

Before he retired The Woodchuck Den, he posted here to sell off the stuff and there may be copies of those books floating around.

The reamer sketches in that book come from Pacific Tool and Gauge.

There are many threads on 20-222’s. I don’t know of anyone who had one that didn’t like it or love it. I agree with what others have said, zero free bore. The print below is just an example, and as you can see, is not a zero free bore.

Thanks, I spoke with PTG this morning I was hoping to find someone to rebarrel that had the correct reamer. I spoke to Kevin Weaver of Weaver rifle and he says he has the correct reamers to accomplish want I want to do. He seemed like a very nice guy and very knowledgeable about the .20's.

There is a fellow named Warren who frequented this page and others. His screen name was Fireball. Haven’t seen him on in a while, but he used Kevin Weaver to smith his rifles, and he was very happy with the outcome. Warren chose zero free bore reamers. I don’t remember the neck diameter that he preferred.

I have two rifles built off this reamer print. Warren “Fireball” put me on to this design years ago and I actually have one of his old Tikkas with a Lilja on it. Warren is a true resource and always was willing to lend me advice.
20-222 Plain Jane—-you can search for that thread over on Saubier for a lot of good information.

Mine both like a stiff charge of H4198 and 32 grain bullets. I have not used Lapua brass though as I believe it would require necks to be turned, as stated by others.

Guys thanks for all the info and help. I have decided to have Kevin Weaver put this project together for me. I have a Muller 20 cal 11 twist SS Rem Varmint 27" cut rifled 4 groove barrel on the way to Kevin so I will avoid the long wait for a reamer and barrel.
Wes
