2 or 3 pillars for 700?

I've got a 700 in a 40xb stock that I am leaving single shot, is it worthwhile to put a pillar in the middle action screw hole or would that allow/induce more stress on the action? I will glass bed it as well. I'm thinking of not since it just holds the trigger guard anyways.

On my 40X [ phase 1, BR rifle ] I d&t'ed the trigger guard screw to 1/4x28 and used it as the rear action screw. I then floated the tang like you do on a Savage. Now in phase 2 I am not going to use this hole initially and just used the normal 2. Eventually I may pillar bed the action and then use the front and center holes and float the tang.

On a 700 there is not enough metal around the middle hole to allow you to tap it any larger so imo you should leave it empty. I would either use a wood screw for the front of the TG or use a threaded metal sleeve in the stock for the front TG screw to screw into.

Also make sure you single shot adaptor does not put tension on the action when the action screws are tightened. When the action screws are properly tighted the single shot adaptor should have a bit of play in every direction so that you know without a doubt that it's not bearing heavily on the action. Once I had verified clearance I might then consider glueing the adaptor to the action with some thing like Yamabond #4 which is more solvent resistant than silicone seal.

I plan to use a davidson glue in adapter, and hopefully it's contoured similar to the action. If not, I'll just clearance the bedding to not touch it, or just bed it as well.

I was thinking of filling the middle hole and using a wood screw similar to my rimfire rifles as well. I may just do that and pillar front and rear.

Thanks for the input.
