2 actions, 2 builds, 2 purposes

I have no clue where to put this, so here goes.

I have a winchester mod 70 WSM boltface, and a Remington 30-06 laying around doing nothing, and want to turn them both into something interesting.

I want a 6mm, and a elk rifle.

The 6mm would be a long range target shooting 105-115 gr bullets as fast as possible.

The elk rifle would be a long range hunting rifle.

What Im thinking is turn the 30-06 into a 6mm-06, and the WSM into a 300 WSM. I have also considered doing a 243 WSSM (assuming I can find brass first), and the 06 into a 280AI.

What would be your guys's take on this? I already have a 260AI, so Im basically looking for a new project, this is not a "need" rifle.

I would do a 6x47 in an 8 twist. The reason is good brass, good velocity, accuracy and fairly cheap to shoot. I would also do a 300WSM for the same reasons. 10 twist for the heavier bullets. Matt

I like your plan although if you really want to push the 6mm bullets fast with no regard to barrel life with your long action and std. bolt face you could go 6x284.

Im not sure why I looked past that caliber. I appreciate the suggestion. It seems to be the best option for what I want.

I shoot all match's with a 260AI, and I have no intentions of changing that. The 6mm is more of a varmint rig, that wont see 1k rounds in 10 years., and Ive dont so many 6.5mm's over the years I want a change of pace.

Now the leaders are 6x284, and 300 WSM.

A buddy that was frustrated with his varmint rig rebarreled a 22.250 to 6mm Rem with custom freebore to suit 105 Bergers. Gets 3250 with RL ....15 IIRC, and shoots 1 1/4 groups @ 500 with PB's on rabbits @ 800+ yards.
It was originally a Tikka T3 Varmint and the only action changes were bolt stop and a longer mag.
Getting brass for it might be a problem now but when he set it up he got 500 so he's set for life.
Crunch some #'s for it and you still get 1000 ft/lbs and 2000 fps @ 750 yards which is still enough to kill all but big deer.
It will powder foul with lots of shooting over a day and goes off song after ~40 rounds but it's still a cool bit of kit regardless. :)

What is your budget? dedogs

Ive built quite a few rifles, and caliber has not had much if anything to do with budget on the other rifles I have built (mabye an extra 50 bucks for dies, etc). My limiting factor in these rifles is wanting to use specific actions. If this build is diffrent lets call my budget 5k per rifle pre optics.

I too like plan B. dedogs

Ok just to throw out some "interesting" options:

For the '06 action how about doing it in 240 Weatherby? Finding brass is a hassle but the coolness factor would make it one interesting (and violent) varmint rifle.
Since you're not afraid if wildcats, how about doing the other rifle in 338-300WSM? Massive bullet selection (vs the 325 WSM) and it would hammer any large/dangerous game on the continent.

I have looked at the 240, but finding brass was holding me back.

Right now the wsm action is a caliber called the 358 BFG. It would make a good big game rifle as it sits, but with a 200gr barnes ttsx leaving the muzzle at 2700 fps it hits like a ton of bricks, but drops like one as well.
