1st Thermal coyote & Flir RS32, 35mm review

This is my pals Flir RS32, 35mm thermal he got in last week
We had it at the range last week and sighted it in on both our ARs and saved those settings.
Since he was not able to go I was able to snag it for a field review.
The biggest issue for me was focus since there is no screen focus besides the eye ring which according to the manual is supposed to focus the view, well yes it does, BUT then the reticle is way out of focus.
I would expect one to focus the reticle and then be able to focus the objective as a regular scope does & I do realize they are not the same for doing that.
The manual only says for view focus use the eye piece so to me this is useless as I need both in focus as anyone would.
I hope Im missing something, but remember I have not played with this and just scrolling the menus I see nothing internal for that.
Auto focus?...it didn't do that at all.
So I ended up with a focused reticle and a fuzzy screen view.
I was calling and using my Flir PS32 thermal to scan and picked this incoming coyote in 4' tall grasses/hay when I saw her head pop up and out of the grass at about 200 yards then since thermals fail in a hayfield or tall grasses had to think like a coyote and try to figure where it would pop up.
That was easy as she had to jump up over clumps and saw her for a second then disappear when she was lower.
She finally had to pop in the edge of the grasses and at about 140 yards as I already was following her with the RS32 and could identify it was a coyote fired off a round and tthwap she spun like a top and then dropped out of sight in the grasses.
Heck it took 20 minets to finally find her. Tell you what walking in 4' grasses looking with a thermal is about useless as Obama.
I was walking 10' stopping & scanning and that's the only way I finally picked her up and after I changed to black hot.
Overall it worked good except for my field/reticle focusing issues.
I should mention this was in NE as NV & thermal use in WY is not legal.

Jim,
Thanks for the great story and the picture. Thermals are great when that work. Its about time to try some Coyotes in my part of the country....Did you mention what cartridge/bullet you used ? Thanks again...

Looks like I left that part out.
.223, 50g vmax, in front of w748 (my p-dog load), MMR AR15, 30p-1 suppressor.

Great story an picture.

Don't really know what a thermal is but my guess is it recognizes heat. Would never use that night stuff as when it's night, it's "sleepy time" for me.

Flat out love to read your hunting adventures.

Are you using this in Wyoming? On private ground? If not you need to read this. Just a heads up.

Nope, not legal in WY & I would not even try it here.
** I have to much invested to be that dumb!**
This is on one of my NE ranches where NV & thermal are legal.

Great quote 5spd, not only is there to much invested, but why would we need the hassle from the judiciary system. Tom.

If you ever get the chance take it. I use nv when ever I can. It makes hunting so much fun. It is worth loosing some sleep.

Around 5 years ago, I installed a Flir thermal imaging system on my boat with a drop-down display for running at night. I can tell you, I envy anyone who is willing to spend the bucks for that scope and can lawfully use it in their State! That is some cool stuff! I am certain that when the patent expires, these things will replace starlight and infrared overnight for every day(night) use. I think they already would have - if not for the super high price.
