1st ELR rifle, which caliber

want to do a budget build, not looking for the best or newest, want to try the sport to see if I like it

which caliber, bullet combo is competitive out to 2200 yards

Thoughts for a beginner type rifle

if u wish to progress your sport the flame suit should not be needed here, jokes are welcome every sixth post

300 Magnum RPR. A few guys doing pretty well with them in the Light Gun class at the SE ELR match last weekend.

300 Magnum anything with a heavy barrel is probably okay.

It's not going to outshoot any of the big boomers. There's a reason they're seperated.

hope the change went through

With all due respect, and I truly mean that, budget, beginner, shooting elk out to 2200yds, are things that should NEVER be used in the same conversation because it not only takes specialized equipment, which is anything but budget, but it takes a very specialized skill level, that can only be crafted with thousands of rounds of practice, too.

Changed to elr shooting which is this forum, spell check problem on the iPad

I started ELR with a 300wm & 230 Hybrids. My favorite practice gun these days is a 7/300wsm shooting 180 ELDm blems. It'll go 2-3/5 on a 32x36" target at 2200 yards under middle of the road conditions. That 7 doesn't do anything the the 300wm won't.
They'll also be good to expand your horizons by experimenting with barrel twist and different bullets.
Not being able to spot every miss isn't the end of the world or a reason to spend $3 a shot. Developing strategies to deal with that is part of getting better at ELR.

I have a .416 Barrett a AX338 lap and a 300RUM. All will go ELR but it all depends on the accuracy you are looking for and the budget you have to feed them. I reload so it's not bad but out of these three, I find the AX to be the better platform. That being said, there is a huge difference in cost for these as a 300RUM is relatively inexpensive. The Barrett is around 5k while the AX came in at 14k. Now back to the original question, if I could only have one, it would be the 338.

I could build a couple of really nice nice ELR rifles for 14 grand. Including a 2 inch BAT and nice glass. Matt
savage axis in 6.5 creedmoor 3 x 9 tasco . ( please save for 4/1/19 ) may I suggest you maybe borrow equipment to try the sport , you may not enjoy ELR with a budget build . If you want to be competitive , It just isn't cheap . good luck . dave . edit , not for you matt .
