1st 6BR

I'm having my first 6br built this week. Have no idea where it will take me, but I'm kinda putting it together for a 7 year old boy who I've got into LR shooting.

It's going to be pretty much a no frills gun, trued Rem 700, which sat for a year and a half at the smith's, Shilen match barrel, 22", HS benchrest stock, Timney trigger. Pretty much parts I had on hand. Question is, will the Shilen perform? It by no means was my choice of barrels.

Got brass, dies, and some bullets coming from Gunstop, 88gr FB, and 95gr Vld's.
Have VV N540 on hand, maybe can get ahold of some Norma 203B, anything else in powder is going to be a crap shoot, Not sure if the heavier bullets are in order, but the kid will be able to shoot 600, won't be competitive, but will hit.
Not much close by for shoots anyway, we'll have to travel.

Here's a link to a thread I started on Sniper's Hide about the little guy, we've come a little farther over the winter months, gonna hit it hard now the weather is shaping up.

Any insight or help will be appreciated, I'm all ears.

As for your bullet selection what is the Barrel twist?

I would think that the Shilen match grade even tho not a select match would be an improvement over any factory barrel. Most factory 6 BRs are nothing to sneeze at.
I think it will be an awesome first 6br

I do recall hearing select match, and smith and I were talking heavy bullets, so the twist should be fast. I'll find out this afternoon.

Start at 28.0 grs and work up. But I have a feeling your working load will be in the neighborhood of 30.5 grs. Esp with the N540 powder.

Somehow I can just picture him older plinking bad guys.

That's kinda what our target theme implies at the moment, maybe not appropriate for a boy his age, but it's what we have. I do think his parents have other plans for him, but if he's mil, good for him!

Froggy,
Thanks for the push, we messed with Quickload the other day, and that weight was around ballpark. I'll pressure it up, backoff and go from there. Like I said, finding powder in this climate may be tough.

The Shilen select match barrel is air gauge measured the accepted tolerance is .0003
If they have a barrel that doesn't meet this but does gauge at least .0005 then that barrel is a match grade

Again I would say that is a much higher standard than a remington factory barrel

milo-2,

N540 is good also N140. Mine like RL15, and Varget. 88 gr and 95gr are good. I have found both to be, a little harder to tune, just see how they shoot. If your twist will shoot the heavier bullets, I would. If you like the lighter bullets the 80gr and 90gr BT Berger are great bullets.

Good luck

Couldn't get ahold of the builder yesterday, so no word on twist, or select match barrel.
Hoping to work up loads coming saturday, so I'll post some findings.
Thanks for the replies.

Also guys,
What size groups am I looking for to be competitive? It wont pay for me to be happy with 1 1/2" groups at 300, if you guys are nailing 1/2".
I'm a definate newbie!

milo-2,

You have not said what long range you are going to shoot. For long range benchrest, I have shot 600 and 1000yds. I like to see 0.2" at 100 and 0.4" at 200 yds. For 600 BR it will take 2.0" aggs to win. For other shooting a like steel match and Fclass a 1/2 moa gun can run any of them.

Have no idea as to what ranges it'll go. A town just west of here has 100&200 yard comps, that will be the starting point.
I just know some of you guys have super accurate guns, just wanna make sure i don't have a lemon. I'll be looking at the gun before myself. :)

I have a shilen select match barrel in 1-8 twist , Shooting a savage precision . I ended up shooting 107 mk with 30 gr. of varget , cci 450 s and lapua brass . I'd be surprised if that didn't shoot really good for you . Think you'll like your setup . Good luck

Thanks 6br, got the gun today, looks good. Not one of those beautiful laminate wood guns.

Any of you guys use norma 203B, I can get that stuff? 88gr & 95gr bergers.

Well I made it to the range today, tried to find pressures on the load. With 88 gr FB Berger's and Norma 203B, noticed signs at 30.5 grains. With the 95gr VLD, and 203B 31.5 grains I noticed a cratered primer, I'll back off to 31.2gr and shoot some groups with different seating depths. Should be right around 2900 fps as per the chrono. That sound right?
The 88gr load should be around 2840 fps.
Oh, it's a 22" barrel, you guys start going with longer barrels? Reason I'm asking is some published velocities seem high compared to mine.

Tested some seating depths with the 95's last weekend, had one nifty little group in the low .2's, but a 4th shot and it was back to the drawing board. Got another 4 loads to test tomorrow or Monday, should come together. Traded Timney trigger to a Jewel, that might help in the grouping end of things.

I notice Berger no longer has any 70-80 grain offerings, even though you can still find some of them. Is the 68gr FB a 200 yard bullet? Seems light to me, but I'm new to even the heavier 6mm's.

milo-2,

Berger list the 80gr as Varmint bullets, they still make them, I think the 70's are gone. The 68gr are great at 200 and longer. A friend of mine shot them in our egg shoot out to 500 yds, andhit eggs at 500 yds.
