195 Berger EOL Elite Hunter

Is anyone using the 195 berger EOL bullets? If so, what are you running them out of? What kinds of speed are you getting? How is the accuracy? How is the performance on game?

I am debating a 7mm of some sort but don't know what i want to go with. The plan would be to use this bullet due to its huge BC. I would like to drive it above 3100 fps though. Is this even possible with any cartridge? Would things like a 7-300wm or a 7-338L be plausible or capable of these speeds? Not overly concerned on barrel life as it will not be shot more than maybe 100 times per year as it will be a hunting rifle.

If the idea of running a 195 gr 7mm bullet at 3100+ fps is a complete pipe dream then please tell me lol. I was just thinking it would be one heck of a gun for large game at those kind of numbers due to the BC of that bullet. Like i said it would be a gun that is shot 100 times or less a year.

Ive pushed the 195 a little over 3200 fps and the pockets were still tight with re 33 in the 28 nosler. This is with a long freebore set up specifically for that bullet. I built over a half dozen 28 noslers in Sept alone. They shot lights out. One customer sent me a 10 shot group at 600 that was under 2", off a bipod. We also used the 195 to harvest a bull elk at 1150 yds. I might do a 7-300 norma or lapua improved and push the 195 at around 3300 fps.

Awesome. 28 nosler looks like it will fit the bill perfect for what I want. Are the rounds still short enough for a magazine system? What action are you building them on?

I doubt you'd get 3300fps with a 7-300 Norma Imp. A 7-338 Lapua Imp should get there easily though. I got my 7-338 Norma Imp reamer the day before Thanksgiving but haven't had time to chamber my barrel yet. It is set up for 195's with a stepped throat. I think 3200+fps is doable in it. I have a 7-338 Lapua Imp reamer on order too for a customer.

My 30-338 Norma Imp case holds 110.3grs of water in 300 Norma brass and 108.7grs in necked down Lapua made 423 Dakota brass (much tougher brass, Norma brass is good but Lapua is Lapua). Basically a Norma Imp. is a 2.5" RUM case, the velocities are almost identical. My 30-338 Lapua Imp case holds 123.1grs of water. There is 150+fps difference between the 2 cases. Top velocities in my 30" barreled 30-338 Norma Imp with 230's is in the 3100-3150fps range ( I shoot them at 3045fps where it's the most accurate though) and top velocities in my 30-338 Lapua Imp are 3350fps with 230's in a 33" barrel.

Ive been building the 28 noslers on the stiller predators due to them already being inletted for the wyatts extended box. With a 28 nosler throated for a 195 it will not fit in a standard 700 mag box. I kinda figured that on the norma and lapua. I figured at 3300 fps that 195 will be a laser, cause 3140 wasn't fast enough ;)

I would bet you could get 50-100fps more with a 7-300 Norma Imp over a 28 Nosler and 200-250fps more with a 7-338 Lapua Imp. When the 195's first came out I talked to Bob Beck about them and he said Kirby Allen pushed them 3400fps in his Allen Magnum.

I am currently trying the 195s in a 7 saum with 30" tube. I started with retumbo. I figured start with the slowest powder I have then work my way down the burn rate chart. I did some pressure testing and got to 64 gr without pressure signs and good accuracy at 63.5 and 64 at 100 yds. I'm going to load some more and try and stretch it out this weekend. I have a feeling I will end up at h1000 or h4831sc before its done.

What is everyone's opinion regarding taking big game with a 28 nosler pumping these 195s at 3100+ fps? I'm talking about things like moose and bear. At 3100 fps, which as stated by others already is achievable, this combo would have almost 4200 ft/lb energy at the muzzle and maintain that energy better than a 300 win mag pushing 210 berger vlds @ 2925 fps which is a load i have already worked up. At 1000 yards this combo would still be packing about 1650 ft/lb.

Obviously shot placement is key in any case. Personally i think this combo would be sufficient for moose and bear but i have never taken one of these animals so i was looking for some insight from someone who has.

Would a DBM system be possible or is the COAL of this combo to long to run a magazine system?

lapua cip mag system is being used by some. The new Curtis Custom 338 lapua action will have a 4" detachable mag system. They will also have runs of standard mag bolt face bolts for it. This will be a game changer for the lapua and edges since it currently cant be mag fed and still have a 300 gr bullet throated properly. The lapua action will be available in early spring.

Moose are not a particularly hard to kill. They are not resilient like elk. Hit them in the boiler room with most cartridges and a good bullet and they will lay down and pass. I will not suggest the combo you are looking at. A 195 at 3200 fps might hit the hide and simply explode without penetration. I would suggest another tougher design.

We had some kills on elk at closer ranges/higher impact velocities, under 200 yds, and the bullet went in and exploded. Exit hole was softball size. They were hit solid in the shoulder. This was with a 195 leaving the muzzle at 3100 fps.

Wondering what COL you are using for the 195 in the 28 Nosler?
