1917 Enfield scope base

Good evening, All. Is anyone aware of a "off the shelf" set of scope bases that fit the radius of a P-17 Enfield action? I have a Winchester model and would like to add a scope without going the side-mount route.

Thank you for your help

Michael

yeah, the old redfield models could be had. google p17 etc. scope base. not made anymore, but they are available. look at ebay. if not redfield, definitely other makes. I have seen them.

errrrr, I may be thinking about the redfield sights made in the 40s and 50s.

The old Savage 110 30-06 length with the flat bridge comes scary close to the ring radius. You'll have to mill the bridge down to a flat profile. I just did one a few weeks ago. Also opened the bridge screw hole to take an 8-40 for the existing hole in the bridge, which was tapped to suit.

In my experience with P14's, the modifications - milling off the rear sight etc make the radius of the rear of the receiver somewhat ambiguous. While the BSA modified models were usually consistent-ish, I'm not sure that there was any standard dimensions. I have usually modified Weaver blocks by re-cutting the radius. If the rear sight "cover" has not been removed this one is an alternative

Good morning, gentlemen. Mine has a weird milled out place on the rear of the receiver. It's not concentric or perfectly squ are to the axis of the receiver. I'm not very familiar with these actions and so not sure what that's about. Other than that, that front and rear receiver radius appear very close.

Will Henry guided me on a P14 action. P14 has the same oval shaped cutout. Made a piece of steel to fit snugly into cutout. I brazed it in, but can TIG it if you have that capability. On the my P14 it had the original ears for the rear sight, which I see your P17 does not have. After removal of the ears I rounded the rear bridge to a 2" radius, which is the same as a Remington 700 action. I then could use two piece Remington scope mounts. Yours may be already for this type of mounts, after filling in the cutout.

I decided to file and fit a piece of steel to plug the large hole on the top of the receiver. Once I file that in, I should have a solid bearing surface to either drill and tap mounts, or just machine blocks and solder those on to cut dovetails for some type of rings. I also had to plug 6 different holes in the sides of the reciever where different types of side-mounts had been used previously. Those I just found screws to fit, added Loctite Red and will cut and file them flush prior to refinishing. Kind of making this up as I go....

I'm wondering if silver soldering scope bases on is better alternative to drilling and tapping? Any qualified thoughts on that?
Thank you

Not generally done , at least not in this country or century. WW1 Germany did it that way . Now we may want different scope next year that requires different rings, now unfortunately the new rings won’t match you bases .
It’s your choice , if you’re more comfortable silver soldering, try it . It’s not that easy , at least when I use to do front sights or square bridges on Mausers .
Three holes for a one piece or 4 with 2 piece bases .
