1911 extractor adjustment

Heavy barrel

Silver $$ Contributor
I just bought my first 1911 45acp brand new. Have around 250 rounds through it. I'm having feeding & accuracy issues with it. It ejects every time but won't fully close a lot of times. I'm brand new to 1911's & I've learned about the shake test. I can put an empty case against the breech & shake it very hard & it won't come loose.

I know the extractor is too tight but it also is holding the case away from the breech face. You can't push it back against the face by hand. See pic's.

Don't know if this is normal or not. I'd rather not have to send it back to the manufacturer if it is an easy fix.

Is this a fairly easy fix or should I call the manufacturer?

What make is it, That looks like the extractor was cut very generously. Easy fix if it is a Colt 70/80 series. If another brand, may have to get a new one from the manufacturer.

The extractor is too long. You can see the hook is actually contacting the case above the rim and not allowing the case to set back on the breechface. If is a new pistol I think I would contact the manufacturer.

The hook shouldn’t touch the case on a 45.

So it's not normal. It definitely didn't look right. So I'll have to get a new extractor? That one can't be modified, right?

Could that be causing accuracy issues also?

Don't want to mention manufacturer's name. Don't want to bash. It's a nice gun & I will be quite happy with it once it's sorted.

I'm mostly a rifle guy & this is my first nice pistol.

Yeah I posted in wrong thread. Wasn't paying attention. Is there a way to move it?
Idk but you’re fine we’re here to help anyone.
If you want to move it just copy your original and paste it on the forum you want it in.
I myself would try to help you no matter what forum you put it in, good luck.
I bought a high end Dan Wesson that’s extractor was setup for a 45acp , ftf all the time in my 10mm especially with hollow points, noticed the problem and about 20 minutes with a small file, some 600 and -1000 grit sandpaper it feeds 100% of the time now.

The gun needs to go back.
The extractor cant be adjusted. Looks like its to long. The breach face may have been cut to deep & not wide enough?

The width of the breach face needs to be larger then the diameter of the brass rim. .480"

The 1911 should always be loaded from the magazine. This allows the case rim to slide up the bolt face & under the extractor.

Placing a round in the chamber & allowing the extractor to slam into it, bends the extractor, overr time.
Normally an extractor can be bent/corrected. But not yours, to long or bolt face cut to deep.

Everything you wanted to know about 1911 extractors but are afraid to ask.

So it looks like the extractor is not too long. Just the hook is too long. And the extractor deflection needs to be adjusted.

I called the manufacturer & they said to send it back. I'm going to break out the files & fix it myself. Worst case is I'll have to buy another extractor.

That’s what I did, works 100% now

There are a lot of reasons that a 1911 slide might not go into battery, If you are shooting reloads or poor quality ammo, The bullets may be seated out just slightly too far for the throat on your barrel. The hood may be just slightly too long. There could be a burr on the barrel lugs or the corresponding lugs in the slide or the barrel/link lug could have been cut wrong or have too long of a link.

Edit to add, If reloading a good taper crimp die can solve issues with reloads too.

Yep, that’s what I would do, careful filing, fit and test
