1908 brazilian mauser

i am wanting to start a new project and i would like to know if this is an ok action to start with. is it a large or small ring. what are the major differences with this rifle and a 98 or if its a small ring what would be the diff between this and a 96. any opinions or thoughts would be great.

All the '08 Brazilians I've ever seen were made by DWM. They're large ring '98s. Large ring has just that, a bigger around front receiver ring (about 1.4" dia.). Also, has larger barrel tenon size, large 1.100"x12t.p.i., small ring .980"x12 t.p.i. '98 cockes on opening the bolt, small ring cocks on closing the bolt. '98 has the "Mauser collar" at the back of the front ring (that's where the military barrels torqued to). '98 has third 'safety' lug under the rear bridge (inside the bolt raceway). Good hunting action (as long as it hasn't been abused or a rusty piece of junk) for .308/.30-06 class of cartridges.

A 1908 is a Model 98 mauser. The prewar mausers had better case hardening [heat treat]. All 98s were military. There were some early commercial mausers.

Most of the Turkish mausers were large rings that were converted to small rings to use up a bunch of small ring carbine barrels that were captured at the end of WW2. So it could be either. You don't really know until the barrel comes off but most that I've seen were small ring. They also tend to be very well used. Before you jump into this project that you.ve been researching on the net, BUY a book on Mausers from Midway or Brownell's. It's by Jerry Knudsen call Mausers-A Shop Manual. It will be the best $ that you spend on the project. It covers EVERYTHING.
