190 smk in 308 1-12 twist???

I read that the 190 in a 1-12 twist was the norm 30 years ago. I have a brux 22 inch 1-12 twist that I have been shooting at a few local matches. Mid range f class. I am going to shoot the 1000 f class next. I have been shooting 168 smk but I spoke to a guy shooting a 308 ftr and he said I should step up in weight.
What do you think?

I have a R700 Varmint 26" 1-12" and I have not had much luck with anything over 175 gr. My hands down fav is the 168 SMK, but they are well known to get squirrly past 800 yds. I have consistiantly shot my 168 SMK's out to 600 yds with excellent results, however i'm taking a 1000 yd instructional class in June and i'm thinking either 175 smk's or 178 Amax's . Have not made my final decision yet, still want to do some more testing..

I shoot 190 smk's in my rem 700 sps varmint ( in a b&c stock) and they do just fine. I have only shot in one match ( at orsa about two years ago) but took first place. my load is 43.8 gr of varget in lapua brass with the ogive @ 2.232.
