190 Sierra Matchkings and 300WM

Hello folks. I am going to load up a few 190 sierra matchkings in my 300 winchester magnum. I'm going to start with H1000, it seems to be the easy button for 300wm in my experience. I'm just curious if any of you have any other favorite combos. I am wondering about any VV powders, I really wouldn't mind stepping away from Hodgon and their greed. Let me know.

Thanks
Matt

Matt,

It's been over a decade, probably two since I loaded a 300 WM with Sierra 190s, but VV N-165 worked quite well in a couple of rifles. I don't have any of the old load data available.

Matt,
I may have some Data I’ll have to look but in 2008 I bought a .300WM fro QMM out of Lewiston Idaho, it was throated for 190 Sierra’s . I was working later that year at ATK and bought some military spec .300wm loaded with the 190 SMK’s, being military it was loaded with ball powder, I pulled them down and carefully weighed out each charge of the same powder and they shot great. When I worked up a load for it was with RL22 but ultimately went with 210 Berger’s

We shoot H1000 in Win Mag like crazy. RL actually achieved the high velocities we like with much less pressure signs and brass abuse.

Unfortunately we are so long on H1000, we're married to it.

Given that you are identifying that particular cartridge and bullet, one combination transcended from mere load data in the sea of possibilities, to immortality.

I’d look at the extensive white paper by the US Navy that defines the MK 248 Mod 1, which also does specify Hodgdon H1000 powder, exclusively.

Steve my 6.5-284 mirrors your experience. I could not find a way to like your post more than once? Drifters gear is a bout 40 miles up the road from me, last time there I bought all the VV165 they had.

Sig loaded the last bunch of Mk248.
MOD 0 190SMK, 73.0 Re22, 3.490 OAL
MOD 1 220SMK, 73.0 H1000, 3.490 OAL
Best accuracy was with a Kris Kyle designed reamer set up to headspace off the shoulder rather than the belt.

Matt,
Davidjoe got me thinking as it was close to twenty years ago when I was working on this project but when he mentioned the MK 248 project that rang a bell in my small brain. So today while loading some 45acp I got thinking about it. I went to my ammo shelf and started digging and found several boxes of it and it in fact was what Davidjoe had posted so then I was curious and all 45acp loading got put on hold. I pulled one down, it was in fact not loaded with ball powder as I previously said but short extruded powder. 75.0 grains of short extruded powder. I then got the H1000 out and it’s short extruded powder but it’s kinda bronze in color, then got the RL 22 out,… looks exactly the same which would make sense to me as at the time ATK owned Alliant powder however Davidjoe could be correct as they usually don’t load with over the counter powders and they may have colored H1000 differently. But I took a couple pics the powder in the middle is what came out of the cartridge on the left is RL22 on the right H1000

20 years ago I had a Win M70 chambered in 300 WM, my load was 77grs of H1000 w/190 SMK, don't remember the exact velocity but I think it was just around 2850.

Sierra 195 tmk or Hornady 195 eldm with N170 powder old blue bag Winchester brass

Are you sitting on a large amount of 190 SMKs? There are much better long range bullets for the 300WM if you were looking to buy.
Hello Rob. No I don't have a lot of them, I am just trying them out. My rifle has a 1-11 twist barrel. So the heavier stuff really isn't in my cards until I rebarrel. I have had good with the Berger 185s, but the price turns me off.

Yeah 11 limits you some but try some 178 ELD-Ms. they have a higher BC than the older 190 SMK and you can get them going a little faster too.

Have ran since 178s through this rifle. It seems to group really well at 100yds. I was getting hit and miss results on steel past 800, that certainly could have been me. An interesting note on the 178s, with the new version of the AB app, it shows that a 178 ELD-X is marginally stabile with a 1-11 twist. I dunno.
