1890 Winchester .22

I have a Winchester 1890 .22 short. Was my father in laws and is in rough shape. I looked in a Numrichs catalog and it is not in there. I do not know if I should attempt to restore it or not. Took it to the range today and everyone said to restore it. Anyone have an idea of where I can go to get parts?

Unless the rifle has a sentimental value it is probably not worth putting the time and money into it. You may want to compute just how much it will cost to bring it back to operating condition, at any rate its value will still not be very much because it is not original.

There are parts out there for the 1890/1906. If you want to invest the money, most any good gunsmith can make it like new with new wood and a good blue job. It's all about the money.

Butt stock, magazine inside tube. Barrel should be lined. Refinish of the metal which is lightly pitted.
You can sometimes find parts on eBay. Some of the rifle stock places make replacement wood for that rifle. The inner magazine tube make take some looking. Most any decent gunsmith can install a liner for you and do the metal work. A liner alone will probably run $200, maybe more. That’s the type of rifle you just have to want to do, as you will have way more in it than it’s value. Doing any part of the work yourself keeps $$ in your pocket. The barrel can be carefully draw filed and polished without loss of lettering. The same for the receiver. Slow careful work with hand tools is the key.

I would first figure what you would allow for your budget and using that as a guide search for parts. I have been asked in the past to "restore" this old pump action .22 and when I ask them what they feel like is a fair price I get answers like "oh, I would spend 200 maybe 300 dollars to get it restored and reblued. These people are absolutely clueless. We can come to a compromise on the parts and I usually completely clean, bed blast external parts then parkerize. Strip off old finish, stain and refinish wood with polyurethane. At 300.00 I can swing a net profit of 12.50. And it's best if your doing it for a friend, you might get an upgrade on your Bourbon at Christmas

Any suggestions on how to free up the outer magazine tube? I removed the drift pin but the two holders attached to the barrel must have rust/crud between them and the tube. Have used a bunch of Kroil. What about heat?
