1860 Colt (Pietta) Soft Hammer Face Fix

I just finished a repair on my two 1860 Colt Piettas that were converted to cartridge.

These Pietta hammers are made of a steel slightly harder than cheese and needed attention after only one season of CAS.

You can send your hammers to a reputable shop like Turnbull Mfg, and have them color casehardened. Other than that you may be able to have the faces welded with rod such as tool steel or spring steel in orer to make them hard.

Yup, that's what I said in the article......But I didn't want to mess with the case coloring and this method only took a few minutes and I'm good to go.

You got to remember, these pistols cost $179 each! I'm not willing to spend nearly this much with shipping and Doug's work. I needed a real inexpensive fix that will stand up for years of hard use.

Thanks!
