17wsm

The 17WSM is already dead. Everyone knows it except the cool aid drinkers. Even so, I hope they can locate some ammo to support their shooting...

So you think the only people who think the .17 WSM has a future are cool aid (sic) drinkers? Awfully generous of you to support their desires for more ammo. I don't have a .17 WSM and probably never will, (I'm just not much interested in any .17), but it's hard for me to believe that a cartridge with so much potential will just quietly fade away. Maybe it will (others have), but I'd like to think that a rimfire offering near-centerfire performance can be developed. Not everybody reloads, after all, and the WSM had the bad luck to suffer from really poor timing, marketing-wise. Reports like shoot4fun's make me think it can and, if so, it will have a market. So I guess I'll just go quietly off & sip my Kool-Aid. :)

This chambering is what every varmint hunter would like to have in their arsenal - or as their only rimfire. Once 1) Ammo performance issue is worked out
2) Ammo becomes readily available and prices drop
3) More rifles are chambered which can best compliment the abilities of the cartridge (such as Anshutz, CZ, etc)
Then, this cartridge will not go away unless something better comes down the pike. Comparing this to the .17 hmr as the next one down the list is like comparing the 17 hmr to the .22 long rifle.

I look forward to also having some "Kool Aid" - just not the current flavor.

I was in both Denver Cabelas this weekend and they had a pile of 17 WMR ammo, and a bigger pile of 17 HMR ammo.. And one store had a bunch of 22 LR ammo, thought it was pricey.. And I finally found 2 box's of 35 grain Vmax bullets to load for my 22 Hornet..

As for the 17 WMR someone besides Savage is going to have to build one before I become interested enough to buy one

Havn't had a problem finding 17WSM ammo.
$18 for a box of 50 is not too bad.

Shot 2 coyotes with it last month.
100yard yote dropped in his tracks and the 200 yard shot yote made it across the river.
Couldn't find him after the water made the blood trail go away.

But I get MOG at 100 yards consistently. (minute of golfball)
Yes the stock does suck.

Boyd's makes replacement stocks for the Bmag

Ya just have to save up some fun tickets to get one, but thanks for the info.

Funny, I saw 17 WSM ammo just today at our local Walmart for I think it was $14 bucks and I also saw ammo at a Sportman's Warehouse in Columbia SC a few weeks ago, all reasonably priced. Cute little round, but I have no interest myself.

The ONLY way I'd consider one is if CZ or Ruger made one.

The B-mag is a piece of.....something. Pretty crude gun all the way around.

And the shortage of ammo is going to put this gun into the "collectors boneyard" real soon I think.

What--Anschutz & Cooper don't make the cut? :)

Ha! Yes I believe they would! I don't know if the pocket book would allow it though.....

Lots of 17WSM here.
I see the below site is making a AR style rifle for the 17WSM

Here's another thread on the subject: http://forum.accurateshooter.com/index.php?topic=3823810.0

I purchased the gun the first month it was out. Ammo is really hard to come by in Minnesota, but I have not been looking lately. Back when I bought the gun I purchased a thousand rounds of 20 gr on Gunbroker for $18 a box (including shipping) because I knew ammo would be a problem. I also ran into six boxes of 25 gr in Cabelas for $15 a box and purchased all of them. My gun does not shoot the 25 grain well, so those are just sitting there.

Regarding accuracy, the problem seems to be in two major areas: 1) the stock, 2) variation in ammo velocity. I fixed the stock and made it at least shootable with the modifications I lay out in the attached link. The stock still sucks, but at least it helped with accuracy and consistency. The ammo shoots all over the board when I chrono'd them. No way any of these guns will achieve .17 HMR accuracy (IMHO) with such inconsistent ammo. I have never been a big fan of Winchester ammo in anything. Hornady is coming out with ammo next year and I hope this will solve some of these issues.
