17Rem barrel length

Just wondering was some of you guys done for shorter barrel links on a 17 Remington I got a customer wanting to go shorter?

I have a 18” 17-223 in an AR build that only gets shot suppressed. For what my intended use of coyotes, fox, and anything smaller under 200 yards I am happy. Have not used it in the field but happy with accuracy. If I was to do it again or get around to a bolt gun I would go for a 20”-22” for added velocity to make up for the tiny bullets.

What are the speeds you're getting on your 18-in

If going shorter with the barrel I would change up on the cartridge and go 17 Fireball. Burn less powder and get equal or better performance.
He's wanting to shoot up the current barrel that is a 17 Remington when we go to rebarrel it he will be swapping to the fireball

I've done 16-17" 17br's. While you lose efficiency you still get more performance than a smaller case and the same length barrel

I had a 16” fireball that would do as well as a buddies 17R that was an 18”. Lol, his was more of a fireball than mine.
The availability of some powders I won’t even mention loads much any more. Been 8+ years since I have seen any H322 or H4198.
I have seen shocking numbers with CFE223 and 25 grain Vmax with my 17R, a bit to much speed.
Is the fellow wanting to chop the barrel for a suppressor?
Just me but I refuse to chop a barrel that I paid for to begin with because the can makes it longer. Too much of a speed freak I guess, I have 28” barrels with a can.

I run 29-30 gr bullets out of my 17 rem. There is a definite terminal performance difference on coyote as velocity drops, so I want to start them as fast as I safely can. I run a 26" barrel on my day stalking/calling rifle. Easy 3950 with the 30's, coyote rarely even take a step. Crazy fun shooting raccoon, they flip on their backs, legs motoring for a few seconds.
