17HMR Lethal???

Was in the gun shop last year and picked up a Savage in 17 HMR on a lark. First trip to the range and man was I impressed. 1 inch groups at 100 with Remington ammo.
Killed 5 hogs that summer all around 50 yds, killed 2 outright had 3 run off. All 5 shots were in the heart area. Based on my experience I find it hard to believe people are making 150 yard lethal shots.
Am I spoiled by my 22-250?

No your not spoild.A 17 hmr has little or no expantion at 150 plus.Even 50yds its like shooting a pellet gun at a crow at 20 feet.Iv used a 17hmr to 50-300 yds on jack rabbits with poor results.

I get tangled up in the 17 stuff.

My noodle is thinkin 17 hmr when the guy is actually talkin 17 Remington. Then when I think 17 Rem he's talking 17 Mach... 17's are weird...

Most varmint shooters are talkin 17 Rem, me thinks.

I'll stick with the 22-250. But a "Black" gun might be in the works.

In Georgia, in some areas, you can only hunt them with RF. ..99% of the time we use a 22MAG. Just cap them in the ear..

I would like to hear more about the kill shots with the .17HMR...Wound channel, pigs reaction when shot, blood trail
did he make any cool sounds when he sucked up the bullet etc..

Basically give me the entire CSI report..

Chuck,
I've been using a Savage 93 .17HMR as a walk around groundhog rifle for several years with impressive results. Many of the shots have been head or upper body shots. I shot one in the head at about sixty yards standing in a soybean field. The round went in one ear with blood spilling from his nose and he slowly toppled forward. Most of the solid body shots do not have an exit wound. The furthest I've shot one was a carefully placed 120 yd. prone shot. All in all, I like the little round. It's a good round if you keep it's limitations in mind.

Mr Mister i killed a small feral pig on my deer lease here in Texas using a Savage 17 hmr and CCI 20gr hollowpoints. The pig was small approx 25 lbs. We were calling coyotes and this little guy came to the call. The pig was standing still facing me at less than 30 yards. At the shot the pig went straight down and died very shortly. I would not normally take this shot with anything but the CCI's, they penetrate better than the ballistic tip type bullets.

As a Rancher i can tell you that we get a lot of unwanted dogs dumped in the country in my area. I will not tolerate stray dogs chasing my livestock. I have used my 17 and the CCI's to kill dogs up to 60 lb's. I can tell you this anything the 22 will do the 17 does as well. Good shot placement and the right bullets are the answer.
