.17 WSM custom build ??

Has anyone built a .17 WSM yet ? I am not excited about the Savage B-Mag and since I have not seen CZ or others build one, I wonder if one could be built by a smith on a small CF action with reworked bolt ? I like the potential of the round, just need a gun I can live with.

Looking for a rimfire for a rimfire league I shoot in that has less wind drift than an hmr.

Yes, I have a custom built 17 WSM. It is built off of the REMINGTON 580 22LR single shot. The bolt face had to be opened bigger for 27 cal case head. The reamer came from MIDWAY. The ejector and firing pin had to be modified. It has a bench rest stock and a K12 power Weaver scope. I took it praire dog hunting this month and it shoots great. JCM24M

I was toying with the idea of a custom pistol in this caliber. What twist did you use? It seems the only ammo out there, if you can find any is the 20 grain. How about pic please!

I used a 6-groove - 10 twist Douglas barrel. I will post a picture at a later time when my wife comes home with the digital camera. This gun was built by Brian Voelker from Ryan , Iowa the great rimfire expert. It is an great praire dog gun that gives you the extra range and you don't have to reload for. JCM24M

My experience with PD's is that the dog towns are big and it is windy out there. Shots ranged from 150yds out to 500+. I love my 17WSM and am hoping that it is accurate enough to reliably hit PD's out to at least 300yds. But like it or not, it is only about half the accuracy of my centerfire varmint rifles and the little 17cal is going to get pushed around with the wind unless I can set up with it at my back or in my face. What was your experience with it in Prairie Dog towns? What was the practical range limit?

You could get the reamer from PTG and use it on a Contender or Encore 17HMR barrel, it may need a beefed up hammer spring but it does work

I just got a custom (mgm) encore barrel in 17WSM but haven't shot it yet because it's deer season! Will test it when season is over. I've got a savage B-Mag that won't do any better than 2.5in to 3in at 100, that's with 20 and 25gr bullets!

Send Savage an email. They will take care of it but it might be a month before you have your rifle back. They qualify the BMag at 1.5" at 100 yards

If you want cheap, get and H&R, and rechamber it. Add a Wolfe xtra power spring and do a trigger job. If you want nice order a low wall.

I getting a 17WSM barrel from MGM, just cause a friend gave me a T/C Contender action. Got some ammo. Called MGM this week no barrel blanks yet.. I like to see some groups shot with the 17WSM. No one has bragged on how it choots, So many problems with the Bmags.

OK got the TC put together. Had to change actions. to tight lots of misfires. We changed the hammer springs. Once we changed to different action it went bang ever time. It was really WINDY in OK. gots some bullets lolled like they key holed had one case split neck past the shoulder
in to the case itself. Gun has 1-10 twist. Maybe the ammo. I'm going to call MGM see if they had any like this

It would be good if it worked but on this caliber and the Savage rifle built for it, the silence is deafening. What happened?

Mine shoots well under 1moa! The action isn't my favorite but all in all I love the gun. It is nasty medicine on ground squirrels .

Mine is the same way. I often refer to my Bmag as the gun I love to hate because there are some things about it I really dislike but then it shoots really well and I fall back in love with it. lol

The part I dislike the most it closing the bolt when in a hurry. It allows you to think you have closed the bolt before it's in battery. Kinda hard to explain .
