17 winchester super mag

What are you guys experiencing with the new 17 winchester super mag? I really like the idea of the cartridge but the reviews im finding are very mixed.

chevy, I have a Savage Bmag in the 17 WSM and I really like it, except that it is probably the ugliest gun I have ever seen. Out to 200 yards, with no wind, it is very devistating on gophers and prairie dogs, I was very amazed at the explosiveness. The one I have must be an exception because it shoots the 25 grain vmax load very well for a cheap gun. It will shoot 1" 5 shot groups at 100 yards pretty easy. What more can you expect for a cheap gun?

I think in the early days of the 17 WSM ammo production they had some QC issues. I would guess that they have dealt with those issues by now. I really think the limiting factor is the guns now. I think the 17 WSM is capable of much better accuracy then what the Bmag is. My 2 pennies use it as you will.

A guy at our local range just got a Ruger 22/77 in one (same action as the 22 mag and Hornet). His shoots well and is a nice little gun but I can't help but think that the Hornady Hornet (17 K-Hornet) would be a much better choice, The Hornet uses the same size action, gives about 600 more fps and when reloaded is cheaper to shoot and has a potential for more accuracy, maybe it's just me but I really don't see a need for the 17 super mag to fit between the HMR and the Hornet.

I dont have time to reload my center fire rifles like i used to. So having a gun chambered in a cheap to shoot, easily available, lightweight farmer friendly caliber is very appealing. Getting out for even an hr or two once in a while would certainly be better then trying to reload and getting yelled at by the old lady.

Mostly targets but the occasional ground hog or squirrel. I shot a groundhog in the head once with an 17hmr and it just ricocheted off.

Wow, I would think a 17 WSM would do the trick for you as long as you were close. Shots at more than 100 yards on a groundhog might not be too affective though.

chevytruck_83: I have really come to like the .17 WSM for varmint hunting. I use it for Coyotes and find it very forgiving to the fur and it drops them in their tracks at up to 175 yards (my longest shot with one). I have one of the first B-Mag production models and experience great frustration in the beginning. After some simple improvements to the stock that came with the gun, I have achieved reliable 1 MOA accuracy. The new Hornady ammo is much more consistent than the Winchester ammo which has seemed to eliminate flyers on paper, but for hunting purposes, even the Winchester ammo worked very well. I have not missed a coyote with the gun I originally purchased. I have some extensive reviews of the rifle as I worked to try to improve accuracy of the original, really crappy, B-Mag on this forum.

Drop in on the Rimfire Central and check the 17 WSM section,
Lots of info both good and bad.

My biggest headache is the over Generous chamber spec's when compared with the OEM MEASURED ammo spec's.

IMHO, lots of room for chamber spec's to be improved for the ammo, as there is nothing else you can improve with RF ammo.

Don

Just remember its a rim fire, cheap gun marketed for predator hunting. If you are expecting more then a hunting rifle, you will be disappointed. I bought mine used cause the previous owner could not get it to shoot. Did a few tweaks to it and now it will shoot 1" groups @ 100 with 25gr ammo. I don't expect it to do any better.
