17 Remington?

You might try a search here: http://www.saubier.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=8

A lot of great info on the small calibers.

Hog

Depending upon the barrel length and twist rate. If it is a 1-9 then H-380, H414, or WW760 with 25gr Hornady hollow points or Vmax's. In my experience, do NOT use a 6 1/2 primer..... use the 7 1/2. WD

H4895, Win 760 & IMR 4320 are my powders of choice. Remigton 7.5 is also a top choice for a primer, because of it's thicker cup material.

Hornady 20 gr vmax has been the most accurate, but not as effective on groundhogs beyond 225 yards. The 25 grain Hornady vmax, 25 gr HP and Berger's 25 grain match/varmint bullet are all good choices for hunting bullets.

17 Remington has been a long time favorite for those of us willing to give it a try.

Enjoy

I once thought about building a .17 Rem like Corbin Shell did to shoot at 600 yards. Still think that it would be a hoot to shoot.

I just read about Hodgdon new CFE223 powder sounds like it would be a good powder for the 17 remington , Hodgdons new 2012 manual has loads listed using this powder for the 17 Rem. Has anyone tried it yet? I did get some powder.

Reloaded some test loads today for my 204 and my 17 rem (cfe223) will try and shoot next week and let you know next week if it doesn't snow.

I have attached the targets and chrono print outs. In summery I was very happy with the CFE223, I started out with a clean barrel and was able to end up shooting 25 rounds with no apparent failing. The #2 target was the best but all in all #1 & #3 ware not that bad. It was 60 degrees with a slight breeze. I have been trying different bullets,25 gr Remington HP, 25 gr Vmax, 25 gr. Berger and 25 gr Hornady HP. The Horandy HP have been the best in my Rifle (CZ527). I cleaned when I got home and have to say that I was able to clean in half the time it normally takes me. All in all I am pleased with CFE223. I also shot my 204 and my 223 with good results. If you want info on these email me and I will send to you. All 5 shot groups were shot at 100 yds.
#1 24.5 gr CFE223, #2 25 gr. CFE223, #3 26 gr. CFE223. I use Remington 7 1/2 bench rest primers.

You mentioned you have been shooting factory ammo. Are you going to start reloading? If so, what specific bullets are you looking to use?

I have been shooting the .17 Remington caliber since the early 1980s and started using IMR4320. That was a great powder with the 25 gr. Remington HP bullets. Lately, I have had great accuracy from using H4895, N-540, Varget, and now the new IMR 8208 XBR. I haven't tried the new CFE223, but it sounds like a powder you might want to try if you begin to reload.

The primers I use are Remington 7½ because they have a thick cup and can withstand the highter pressures that build up in the .17 Remington caliber. Most of the bullets I shoot now days are coated with either Danzac or hBN. I used to shoot lots of 20 gr. V-Max bullets in prairie dog towns, but the wind deflection factor got me to change over to the 25 gr. V-Max, 27.8 gr. BTHP Hammetts, 30 gr. FBHP Starkes, 30 gr. FBHP Nagel T-000, and 30 gr. BTHP Kindler Golds.

If you do start to reload for the .17 Remington, keep us informed on your results.

i have a factory rem varmint, it likes 23.8 varget and a 30 gr todd kindler gold will hold .250-.300 moa. pushin 3800 fps very hard on coyotes way out there.also likes the berger 30 gr with same load. shooting cci br pimers i think.

Thanks , for all the info. I tried a few reloads, my 17 rem shoots much better with the reloads . Starting to really like this 17 remington, now if I could get just some good weather ....
Thanks guys.
