.17 Remington obsolete?

Bought a Hodgdon 2025 annual reloading manual (the magazine one) last
nite and noted it didn’t have the .17 Remington listed for loads. I know
info is available online but I like to see it all in front of me cuz I’m old
and old school.
I called Hodgdon and asked why and they said they weren’t including
older obsolete cartridges in it.
So make a note of it if your shooting the .17 REM. , your
old and obsolete and out of it….

The annual has not had much of anything to make me buy one for a few years now.

What “grinds my gears”, there are some fine older cartridges out there that have little to NO data for “new” powders. One can see a new powder listed, see what data there is, and know it would work in another cartridge that sees no “love”.
On the other hand, the annual has had some cartridge data included over and over for a number of years that was worked up in the 80’s! Maybe the just needed filler?
I also understand it is no small task to take on working up load data to publish load data.

Yup I am old and obsolete, along with cranky I suppose. Lol, also zero tolerance for stupid.

17 Remington, I believed for a lot of years the hearsay and negative comments. Got my first one several years ago and that has turned into three now;-). I have NO complaints.

Yeah...don't let the local groundhogs and gophers hear that. It would only give them false hope. I still love my .17s and .223s for nice calm days of popping them out to 300 yards or so. Wind picks up or distance increases, my .22/250s and .243 get a workout.

OBSOLETE?!
Hardly. Some of those Hodgdon "techs" are likely to tell you anything. I called with a question about the 6.5PRC and one powder they didn't have printed data for. Guy tells me "we don't test wildcats." WHAT?!
They had data for the 6.5PRC but just not with the powder I was wanting to try. He never looked at their database !

If anyone has an old obsolete 17 Rem rifle they want to get rid of in say an obsolete CZ527 rifle, I may be willing to help you get rid of such a obsolete rifle an no charge to you. Never owned one. Though I did the newer 17 Rem Fireball. Did the magazine offer load data for the Fireball, 17 or 221?

I think out of fashion would be a better term. I think its still pretty popular for people who save pelts.

I lost interest in the 17s cuz there is no support. I was looking about a year ago and the only bullet in stock anywhere was 20 gr vmax and even if all offerings were in stock it was only a handful of them.

In another 10 years I don't think there will be support for any fast flat low bc varmint cartridges with how its going.

It has been a few years since I’ve seen factory .17 Rem ammo on the lgs shelves. It was 34.00/ 20. Fortunately, Im sitting on several thou of r-p 7.5’s, Orig R-P 25 gr, Berger match 25 gr, and gobs of brass to feed my Sako and Lothar Walther bbled AR-17.
