.17 rem Brass ?

Was looking at a .17rem Shelin AR barrel on midway ,seem d like a cool caliber but started looking at component availability and dont see anyone making .17 rem brass. And apparently you can't properly make it from .223 ( with I have alot of ). Is there anyone making it still ? Mabye i just didn't look hard enough.
Thanks !

Remington, Norma, and Nosler list it, and out of stock....... but finding new brass for the 17 Rem right now would be a near miracle. WD

A good deal on that barrel...I have thousands of 17 Remington factory brass, it's a fun caliber and a great Squirrel gun...15.5 gr were recently shot at over 4800 fps the book says over 4900 fps with a powder I didn't have.
So you can make 17 Remington out of 223 or 5.56 brass...but it'll be around .O20 short on OAL...no big deal. Just running 223/5.56 through a 17 Remington die just usually crushes the shoulder...to much brass to move at once.
So, I use a .222 RCBS trim die to set the shoulder back to 17 Remington specs first, then a Redding 17 Remington die to full length size it. Works great. You can have all the 17 Rem brass you want. Or use 204 Ruger cases and trim to length your exact OAL...and use the same method.

The short brass will give lessons in carbon removal in short order.
The 204 brass is a better way to go if you have too. Capacity is usually less with the 204 brass, so adjust accordingly.
Out of an AR, I would lean towards the 20 practical or the 17-223, just because of brass.
Start loosing 17 Remington brass and it would frazzle me in short order.

Thanks everyone, I think if I do do something I'll do the 17-223 just because I pick up so much .223 brass for free

Take your range brass and sell it. Take those funds and buy virgin or once fired.
Range brass can give you a “range” of problems, even more so in small calibers, neck wall thickness and case capacity. Then any dink or nick in the brass can cause a crack when sizing down.
I have been down the same road trying to save a few bucks. In the long run, the frustration and end results were more costly all the way around.

I've been shooting .17 Rem for 30+ years. At 'reasonable' loads, brass life is good. Buy it when you can find it and take care of it. A few years ago it took me almost a year to find and buy a couple hundred rounds since the manufacturers only print it occasionally.
Good luck hunting.

I have 17-223 new brass for sale
I have since been at the right place at the right time. I acquired enough 17 Remington brass and bullets to wear out a couple of barrels.
I really believe that the longer neck on the 17 Remington makes a difference as far as throat issues.
