.17 Portable Cleaning Rod

I was cruising the net looking for a multi-peace cleaning rod kit for my .17 HMR, something that will fit in my pack. Many out there, the question is why do they all use steel rods? Possibly the diameter will better take the stress of cleaning better than aluminum? Should I be concerned with the possibility of damaging my SS barrel?

Thoughts please.

As long as its polished good it doesnt matter if its steel or brass its not going to scratch it, but the joints in a multi piece rod will

So I'm not refuting this but I have long wondered if that is the case. I've heard many reports of cleaning rods damaging barrels but the metal in cleaning rods is usually brass. Brass is a very soft metal. I find it hard to believe that a soft metal could damage any barrel unless repeated cleaning to the point that an army was exhausted in the process was the reason. It would mean that the barrel metal is also very soft. I've looked at a fair number of barrels via a bore scope in recent years and I see barrels that look like they were cut by hand with a chisel (very rough and crude) that shoot lights out and barrels that look like they were crafted by the hand of god himself that shoot like shit. At this point I could not tell you why one barrel was so terrible and another was so nice let alone why one would shoot and the other would not and the ability to shoot had nothing to do with the condition of the bore.

Your thoughts?

I have never seen a brass rod. They are usually a high polished stainless or a coated spring steel. The coating picks up grit and that embedded grit is usually the culprit. A polished SS rod like we usually use will not embed grit and will not scratch the barrel. You must keep it clean or all the grit just on the rod will scratch it though. Just keep all this in mind when selecting a rod. A bowed up arched rod beat down the bore because of the wrong jag or whatever will cause damage too.

Looking for .177 air rifle cleaning kits produced more choices. I think I will go with this one. It has brass rods. Cleaning kit.
Bear in mind that I do Have a Dewey cleaning rod to use at home. This is for in the field, in my pack. Useful especially if I end up with some sort of barrel obstruction.

I have a brand new unused Kleen Bore 17 kit I pack in with me. Haven’t used it yet for my 17 Rem. I only take it for just in case.
I prefer my single piece rod at home for cleaning chores.

Cheers.

From what I have read, air gun cleaning is usually done with a piece of fishing line pulled throught the bore with a patch tied on. I have 17 cal brass rod that I use at home. I carry a 17 cal bore snake in the field in case I need to clear the bore of whatever. I do not care for those segmented rods. Seems I always break one at a joint.

Please explain the procedure for clearing a bore obstruction with a bore snake.

To me it would be like trying to push a wet noodle up a wildcats ...

OK maybe I spoke out of turn. I have a 22 cal 6 piece rod that I bought just for "clearing" obstructions. First obstruction I used it on was a stuck bullet in the throat area. Broke the rod at a joint and dint get the obstruction out. Other than that my obstructions are dirt in the barrel from me being stupid.

FWIW my 17 cal brass cleaning rod is like a 3 piece. I am always worried that I will break it when cleaning a rifle.

For just cleaning, look at the patch worm kit, they have a .17 cal option, I use 'em on 22RF rifles (bolt & semi), very portable, durable, etc.

I place the correct 1 piece rod in the hard gun case under the foam. Anything else I may need is semi-organized in a 'fishing tackle' box. Jags, solvents, patches, screw driver kit and 'grid bore sighter' with a note on where on the grid the rifle indexes after being sighted in on paper. In 60+ years I've never experienced an obstructed bore, I never carried a cleaning kit into the back country. I do take an oily rag in a zip lock bag. The worst that can happen is may need to share a gun or borrow from the guide. I'm not a 'bore snake' fan, especially after one of my gopher shooting friends got it stuck in the bore. We're still laughing 5 years later.
