17 hornet manufacturers

Just wondering who is still making 17 hornets? By the looks it’s the savage m25 and ruger 77/17, and Anschutz as well. But been told there’s pretty much none available here in Aus. Is there only a small run or two per year on the US made guns?

I think it has been over 3 years since Ruger made any 77/17's. CZ doesn't list the 22 Hornet anymore, so I doubt they will make the 17 H. You can get barrels for the T/C Contenders and Encores from MGM. A friend has the Savage and well it's a Savage...

I just got an Anschutz in 17 Hornet, sweet shooting little rifle! Brass and ammo are available right now, but that can go away, and Hornady only runs it every now and then. So if you want one, get the ammo while you can. The brass is very thin, so I ruin a few seating bullets.

With the majority of actions out there being push feed VS CRF and the Hornet being a rimmed case I'm not sure we're going to see much if anything new in the way of a Hornet anything. When we lost the CZ 527 that really hurt and pretty much only left us with the Ruger 77 as a decent quality Hornet option in a repeater. I guess Savage still makes the model 25 and I guess they shoot ok but I'm not sure I could ever bring myself to buying one.

It would be nice to see someone like Hornady or one of the other big companies develop a small non rimmed centerfire cartridge that fit somewhere in between the Hornet and Fireball, and, if it's not to much to ask I'd like it to be something in 20 caliber.

If it's not to much to ask I'd like something like the 4.6x30 HK but using standard small bolt face with just a little more case capacity so it can shoot the 20 caliber Hornady 24gr NTX bullet somewhere around 3800fps. Oh, and we'd like good affordable loaded ammo too.

You can always bush a 700 223 bolt to fit a hornet case, my original 17 badger on a 700SA has one.
A contender is another option.

And the Hornet case plays well with a push feed action like a Rem 700? With so many 700's out there that would certainly make things easy for a semi custom Hornet build.

I love the look of the Anschutz, but not the price tag. A pretty rifle and stock has no place being doctored with arca rail and dragged around at night chasing predators too. Shame about ruger, but obviously there has been covid and a heap of stuff going on, hopefully they get production going again.

I have quit buying other Hornady products because of the poor production of 17HH brass. It won't be long and I'll have it rechambered to something else. I don't like being manipulated.

I have a cz and my buddy has a savage. His gun shoots good. Secure brass and or loaded ammo before you worry about a gun. It was like 3 + years with no ammo. They ran brass recently. A really good scale that weighs .01 gr will really help cuz of the tiny case. I love it but overall its a lot of effort and expense for what it does. I would consider a 20 vartarg or 20-222 if I was looking for a small sub cal again.

Maybe I was fortunate, but my Savage 17H was a demon on game out to 350 yds.I looked at the Ruger - also accurate, but liked the Savage stock. With a lightweight can, quieter than my 222. I eventually sold it (regret) to fund another project - it wasn't getting used so much, with range shooting taking up weekends. An easy cartridge to reload - most of the manual's loads don't come close to factory speeds, but proper loads can be worked up with CFE BLK. The overly long action did make cleaning a PITA, until I made a bore guide with a cut off case and aluminium tube. Maybe get another one...I still have the cleaning rod

My sage rat shooting buddy has a Savage and it's an excellent rifle as far as accuracy. I got brass when it was available (like now), spent some money to do so. But, that's the case for whatever caliber you get into if you need brass. My CZ shoots extremely well with CFE BLK. It is important to have a very accurate scale, and I ended up improving my reloading accuracy when I started loading for the 17H. I got a A&D EJ-54D2 scale, which is accurate to .005 grains. Now everything I load is more precise.
However, if you can swing it, I also would consider a 20 Vartarg as RabbitSlayer suggested. I will be using my 20 VT on sage rats more than my trusty 17 HH, as it reaches out with more punch with a 32 Grain bullet compared to the 20 grain in the 17. Cuts wind better too. Both are excellent, but the 20 VT gives you options on slightly larger game like rock chucks or PD's, coyotes, and so on.

If it doesn't shoot, I'd put a Lilja 1-9" twist 4-groove barrel on it and (budget allowing) re-stock it with an HS Precision graphite stock and bed it. That is what I did to mine. Shoots as well as one will find, regardless of price.

Dan’s a stand-up guy. A factory 527 in 17 HH is usually - with a little load work - a pretty easy .5 or .4 gun. That’s without bedding.
