17 Hornady Hornet HH Primer Hole

Anyone know what size the primer hole is supposed to be on a 17 Hornady Hornet. I've been fire forming factory loads and when I go to prep the cases they seem to be all over the place. They range from a little over 60/1000s up to 80/1000s. In my case prep I've cut them all to the standard 80/1000s but was considering setting some with smaller holes and doing a comparison of small holes (around 65/1000s) to those I already have cut to 80/1000s. Any feedback on this or am I just wasting my time? On such a small case I was wondering what effect I should have in having smaller flash holes. I'm using AA 1680 which is fairly easy to light.

Thanks.

Try over at Saubier.com, lots of 17 HH shooters there. Also, did you check with Hornady to see what they say it should be?

They were no help and were somewhat rude. They didn't want to answer since I bought loaded rounds instead of buying new cases to load.

The main thing is that they are all the same size, and not so large that you start blowing primers. If you have no problems with the .080 holes, you have no problem and no need to fix it.

Can't say as I saw your post on Saubier. I use the same flash hole uniformer on the 17HH as I do with 223 and I haven't measured any but Tilleyman would be the one that might have measured the flash hole. What brass are you using that has that much of a variance?

My flash hole uniformer measures 0.075"

I'm using loaded hornady super performance with 20gr v-max.

I've read others on the internet complaining of the same issue so it appears to not be isolated.

I know there were some issues with Hornady's brass last year, shallow primer pockets and the rim not being flat- almost like they tried to swage the pocket deeper. A few pieces of brass I have from last year had burs in the flash hole

The brass I got this year looks a lot better
