17 HMR Match Grade Ammo?

Certainly not a thorough study(only approx 75 rounds) as ammo is not cheap, but I have seen some 17HMR accuracy improvement sorting 17HMR based on rim thickness. The 17HMR is not head spaced off the rim like the 22WMR, but I tried sorting the 17HMR using my Neil Jones tool with the 22WMR insert. I did see my groups shrink. Sorting reduced some of the vertical. In my rifle the thinner rim cases appear to yield somewhat smaller groups.

I've found certain lots to be much more accurate than others. I cleaned out the local WalMart one time of Federal at $8.88 per box years ago and those shot amazing. Once I ran out, my 17 HMR didn't seem accurate any more and I even quit target shooting with it. I doubt they will ever do match ammo though as I don't see a market for it at least here locally.

Don't know if it's any of the components or old, worn out loading machinery at the factories but I've found the same thing. Guns shot great initially and then fell off. In keeping with today's corporate mentality, I'm leaning toward the worn out loading equipment. My HM2s now shoot better with OLD ammo than the 17HMRs with new.
