17 fireball reduced load?

Has anyone run a reduced load in a 17 fireball? I'm looking for about 3000fps with a 20gr

yes yes there are other things other there but the 17wsm I doubt will take off while winchester makes the ammo and I don't like hornet based cases. From experience 17hmr is just a bit small and the rest are just a bit too big. I have a donor sako l461 that I'd like to fit with about 18" parallel barrel to make it handy out the car (we do a lot of pest eradication at night out the window or off the back of a utility in australia)

Ideally I'd like a shortened version of the 17 fireball but I think forming, dies and reamers are going to be expensive and difficult.

Cooler powder should help, someone the Quick load should be able to run the maths, something like N150 or N160 I would think.

I have a 17AH, my friend a 17 Fireball, frankly not a lot of difference but the Fireball case is certainly more robust. Why do you need the reduced velocity?.

There is some data here:

But the reduced velocity seems to be coming from using a 39gr bullet, that will probably have been discontinued in the present situation.

Check out the .17 Viper...

My buddy Drew has one, there is some info over at Saubier about his and the guy who developed it.....

I have been using "Trail Boss" for all my reduced loads, everything from 14 Hornet to 20 Vartarg. It works really well, I don't know if you can get it over there but if you can check it out on the Hodgdons web sight.

AusFClass,

Bob is steering you well here if Trail Boss powder is available to you. Otherwise, you'd likely have to seek a wildcat using the 22 Hornet as a parent case to get the lower velocities you are seeking.

An older 17CCM (Cooper Centerfire Mag.) would meet your goal of 20gr. bullet to 3,000 fps. But it too uses a 22 Hornet as its parent case, which you indicated you'd rather avoid. Even the shortened versions of the 221 Fireball case are powerful.

The 17 Viper mentioned above will launch a 20 gr. at 4,000 fps! The Viper is a great wildcat based on the 221FB case. I currently shoot a wildcat on the 221 FB case. It's called the 17 Boomer. It is significantly shortened to just 1.023" in case length with a 40° shoulder. At just 10.0 gr. of WW296, it launches the 20gr. V-Max at 3,600 fps. It is incredibly efficient and flat shooting. It only drops 3/4" at 200 yds. with a 100 yd. zero.

To avoid all the costs and logistics of a wildcat, Bob's recommendation is an excellent one if Trail Boss powder is available to you.

Some info ref. Trail Boss and reduced loads.

Looking at the ADI powder equivalents chart, it appears that ADI makes Trail Boss.

The 17 boomer sounds like exactly what im after in reality! Can you use modified factory dies to form cases and for seating or do I need a custom fl reamer as well as a chamber reamer?

I've sent two e-mails to you as of Friday, but they have been returned undeliverable since your mailbox is full.

Let me know when you've cleared it and I'll resend.
