I had a friend that bought one when they first came out in the early 90’s. He would take it gopher hunting with us and try to impress us with its ballistics. We weren’t impressed and made fun of him. I don’t know what he did with it, but he soon quit bringing it on our varmint trips.
30 years later, I see a nice Cooper sporter in 17 CCM and I decide I want to revisit that cartridge, as I had a 17 HMR, 17 Hornet and 17 Remington. So I did some research and decided I would get it. C and H dies had a set on the shelf, and all I needed was some brass, I had plenty bullets.
I called Russ and incredibly, he still had 1200 rounds of brand new brass. I got it and loaded up about 500 rounds and started shooting it. If you haven’t seen one, they are just a tad bigger than a 17 HMR.
It is a perfect gopher gun, and I have killed a bunch with it. Delightfully light and accurate, I am all loaded up again for another season of shooting when the snow clears and the gophers come back out…
