Looking to rebarrel a sako heavy barrel 17 Remington. Anyone know whom makes good 17 barrels. The manufactures I tpically use apparently stop at 20 cal.

Always wanted to try a Lilja .17 barrel. Ordered a 9 twist Rem Varmint contour blank from his "in-stock" listing for a 17-204. Shoots great! Less than 1/2" groups from the start of load development. Couldn't be happier. Vic

I have a HV Krieger on my 220 swift and it seems to be holding up well. Probably looking for a 1:12 twist as I will shoot 25 and 30 gr in the 3600 to 3900 range. The factory barrel is a 1:14 but considering a 1:12 for the replacement.

When I measure a round (turned) how much should I allow for clearance in the neck when I order a reamer? This obviously is not a bench gun but want to minimize working the brass.

To shoot 25-30 gr bullets in 17 CALIBER you will need a 9 or 10 twist barrel. Shilen recommends a 10 twist 17 barrel for bullets up to 30 gr and 9 twist for above 30. I shoot 25 gr Hdy hp through my 9 twist Lilja with very fine accuracy. Krieger makes excellent barrels, but I the last time I checked they don't offer 17's. Vic

They don't make 17s. If they did that's what I'd get.

Lilja is a very good choice and he offers 14 different Sako contours, I am sure one will match your contour.. Good luck with your rebarrel..

I asked this same question last summer about 17 cal barrels to 2 gunsmiths that I consider to be on top of their game. Both said their first choice would be Lilja.

And, just by coincidence I recently purchased a barrel from them (this is the 4th different barrel I've purchased from them) and was once again reminded as to why I like to do business with them. Nice people, return phone calls in a timely manner, deliver close to their target date, and all of the barrels that I've got from them are great shooters that clean up easily. WD

Bench Mark makes a good 17 barrel

Too bad they don't make them anymore. I purchased one of the last 5 five 17's they did. It was a really nice barrel.

I have an older 17 Rem that was built with the Lilja.

Its my dads gun and its been around since the early 90s.

still shoots incredibly well.

Got a Lilja on order along with a PTG reamer to fit my cartridge. Neck will be .199 - .200 range.
