.17-6.8spc

I am wanting to build a .17 in a AR platform to shoot the 30gr bullets. I have looked at the .17 predator but do not want to fire form. The .17 223 is a option but would like something that i feel like i can get to the 4000fps range with. I have looked at the .17-204 and am still studying that option also as it looks like it may fill my needs. That leads me to the 17-6.8. It has a water grain capacity much like the ppc case and is AR friendly. I know many will say its not efficient but neither are several of my other favorite guns. They do not see large volume of shooting as they are coyote guns. Ive always had the .17 itch and since i like playing with something different I thought it may be a good one to try. If anyone has built one please let me know your thoughts. Pacific Tool lists reamers so hopefully someone has knowledge of this.

A .17-6.8SPC would be a heckuvalotta case prep to feed a brass munchin' AR semi-auto.
That's prolly why you don't see many/any out there...

Agree with above. If you're hard set on a .172 cal. AR, do a .17-223. Least amount of case prep, no forming, and you won't cry if you shuck cases into the weeds and lose them. Military brass is cheap, and everywhere.

You might could do a .17-204, but I'd sooner steer you to stick with the reliable feeding of the .223 case. A .17-204 has alotta case length & tiny neck, not ideal for cycling semi-auto AR style. The whole idea of an AR is to have that fast followup, so don't potentially negate reliable feeding for a few extra fps...

I have a .17Predator bolt gun and its a lil' badazz. No way would I bother to do one on an AR!

For consideration...

I run a 6PDK in my XTC spacegun and it works great and cases are easy to form. That said, I can't imagine sizing a 6.8 down to 17. You will need several hundred dollars worth of forming dies, custom sizer, neck reaming and/or trimming and the gas system in an AR for that round is a bit uncharted. Quality brass for the 6.8 is not near as plentiful or cheap as the .222/.223/.204 based cases. I'm just starting to play with a 17-222 and I would recommend staying in that family. If you have to have more volume than the 204, then I would go with the .22 ppc because case forming is going to be so much easier/successful. Don't be afraid of fireforming, those loads usually shoot as good or better than the full bore loads and are great for practice from position.
