155SMK[2156] in a 1:10? Anyone get them to shoot?

shooting 155.5 bergers out of my 308 at right around 2900 fps and am not having any issues it's a 10 twist.

FWIW, I have NEVER had good results using Sierra in my Tubb. I have had better results using either Lapua or Berger & even AMAX. It really likes the AMAX 168 even at 1K yds. go figure ... before 1K it prefers the lapua 155 and when I need to just concentrate then I goto 185 Lapua rBT. FWIW

I've loaded up the last of the box to do another OCW test, I pushed these back to .020 off the lands.

This is kind of a case of target fixation for me. I've never used anything but the heavies for competition. I just cant believe that the 155 wont shoot any better than they did. If this doesn't work I'll just forget about them. I have a load for the 185 Berger that's a laser, I've never had anything shoot that good, and a load for the 175 SMK that I want to dial a little better.

The painful to the wallet part is how good the 185s shoot. Off of a sinclair F-class pod I consistently get 3 shot groups in the .2s at 200 yards doing load development.

I've actually kept using the 2155 "Old" PALMA bullet, I gave a box of the "New" 2156 an attempt in a newly built Broghton 32", 5C, 1-10" twist and didn't find a sweet spot. Fired some of my older M1A gas gun rounds loaded with the old bullet and haven't looked back, they have worked well for the limited Mid Range I have access to.

So to answer your question, I didn't get them to work either.............

I am a Palma shooter and am using the new 2156C; try jumping 40thou. I read about guys using 40thou on the nationalmatch.us (long range forum). I tried this and my rife started grouping much better than the 20 thou I was using.

Are you guys shooting the Berger 155.5 FULLBORE thru a standard .300 x .308 bore & groove diameter or a .30 Cal tight .298 x .3065/.3075?

Thanks

I shoot them in both Bartlein 5R and Krieger 4-groove, both .300/.308.

Standard .300/.308

If you drag out your micrometer, the Fullbore has a pressure ring that measures about .3084 They simply do not need a tight bore. For that matter, I haven't run into a match bullet that did (I've never tried the Sierra 2156 so no info there).

If I understand correctly, the tight bores were for Palma style shooting during the days of issued ammunition. The tighter bores would get the bullets up to a speed where they would make 1k with less difficulty. Now that everyone is shooting high-quality bullets and (mostly) hand-loads, the point of using a tight barrel is moot.

What I don't know is which barrel would make more velocity before pressure signs appeared with a good quality match bullet. I'll leave that answer to the guys that still use the tight barrels.

Count me as another vote for jumping them a bit further. I'm running them .040" off the lands (from the same long range forum suggestion, perhaps) and have been quite happy there. They've worked in barrels with twists of 11, 12.25, and 13. And in the 13 twist, they even worked very well loaded for .040" jump a 2011 Fullbore chamber, but the 13 twist had a Palma 95, with its much longer throat. So I'll be surprised if they can't be made to work.

All that said, if the heavies work... well, there's your load. :-)
But, if you want to save some money with the 2156s, try jumping them a bit further.

Most of the guys I shoot with (when I'm shooting), have switched to the 2156's. They still use the tight barrels and are very pleased with the 2156's.

I'm having my M700 rebarrled with a Keiger, 1:13, 5R, .298/.3075. I'll let you all know how it works with the 2156's. I use Varget and figure I can still use 47gr as a max (in .308 Win).
