155 velocity in a short barreled 308?

XTR

F-TR obssessed shooting junkie
I've never played with 155s much. What is the shortest barrel that you can reach 2800FPS with a reasonable load. I know that the fullbore target guys get 3000+ with them in a 30" so I'm guessing it is in the 22" to 24" range. Any experiences out there?

Not interested in data on anything but 155 class bullets.

My Rem 700 SA 308 Varmint w/ 26" Heavy barrel.

I've launched 10's of thousands(3Bbls) of 155's through 24"-27" 1:10" twist barrels at 800-1000yds in NRA LR Comps w/o issue.
1:11" & 1:12" twist Bbls didn't fair as well w/ lighter 155/156gr.

46.0-47.0 gr of IMR4064 or VV 135 in Rem URBR cases at 2850fps.

Hodgdon's reloading data page for Benchmark suggests 43.0 grains max. w/ 155 in 24" 1:12 gives 50,200 CUP & 2,750 fps. With 8208 it's 45.3 grains, 60,900 psi, 2,850 fps so your guess is a good one.

Those they term their max loads BTW, ought to fit what most might call ‘reasonable’.

I run more than 43.0 grains with 155.5’s in 30” barrels & brass life (with Lapua Palma brass) is excellent shooting both Fullbore & Palma events.

We just got through working up loads for a Shilen 10T, 26", and a Hart 10t-23" with 44g of R#15(WLR) in Lapua brass, 2700 & 2635 fps, respectively with 155g Berger Hunting Hybrids. Groups at 600 were incredable, these are deer hunting rifles. This is a hot load, work up to it in your rifle.

I think that a slower twist would be better with this 155g Berger Hunting bullet, but we got a deal on used, like new, barrels.

I got into a high node at 2,990 fps (47.2gr Varget) in Winchester brass and 155 Scenars in a 24" bbl.
But settled on a 2,895+/- fps node (45.2gr Varget). During load work up I got a harder bolt lift during primary extraction at about 3,040 fps.

This was with a Savage 10 FCP-K. That barrel always shot a little faster than most.

I think 2,850 fps from a 24" bbl would be normal.

I'm shooting a Rem. 700 308 with a 20" twist is 11.27 Rockcreek M24 5R barrel . Shooting a 168 gr. Sierra MK HPBT bullet. Zero is 200 yards , never tried the 155's need for speed was never an issue for me . How far out are you shooting as an average.

2830fps with 155gr scenar, Lapua case RL15 @ 45grs

2950fps with 155gr scenar, Lapua case MR2000 51.1grs...wish this powder was not so temp sensitive

Rifle: Trued and bolt sleeved 700 with 22” Rockcreek 5R 11:25 twist M24 barrel. Both loads shoot .3’s easy and better when I do my part;)

~2840fps w/ 46.5g IMR-4064 in LC cases from a 20" 1:10" Savage. Using 155g Nosler CCs.
This load is a full grain below max according to Hodgdon and their Winchester cases. My LC cases are about 56 grain water capacity, for what that's worth.

I’m seeing 2,710 with a 16” shilen (midwayusa prefit) and a warm load of 8208XBR and 155amax. I am using Lake City LR brass so that is limiting me some but I don’t think you will comfortably achieve your goal of 2,800 in 16” without running the ragged edge... that load however dropped a doe in her tracks at 305m and I don’t think she noticed what velocity it was traveling at.
