155 Scenar seat depth??

I will be shooting F/TR with a .308 this year since my F(O) 6AI barrel packed it in.

I have found and as other shooters have discussed, the Sierra 155 MKs seem to like a jump to the lands whereas the 155 AMax seem to like a touch on the lands for seating depth.

Just got a good deal on some Lapua 155 Scenars. My question is, "What have other forum members found for Scenar preferred seating depth - jump?, kiss? jammed?".

In a tight Palma chamber and short throat, they performed best at 2.750, just touching. This is a magazine-fed rifle. In a conventional .308 chamber, which does not have a very tight throat, they worked best at 2.905, in .015.

Both barrels are .300/.308 and did not shoot the Lapuas (.3080) as well as the Berger 155.5 Fullbore (.3085).

YMMV

I am getting very good accuracy out of a savage tube running them hot .015 off the lands. They are sub MOA out to the 400 yards I can shoot.

Gator, interesting comment on bullet diameters. I haven`t shot F/TR very much so never did an analysis of the various 155s for the .308.

Just miked a Sierra 155 MK at .3080, the old style, 2155C. A 155 AMax miked between .3075 and .3080 around the shank.

Don`t have any Bergers but the Ontario Palma team ordered a truckload over the past Winter so will ask one of them to mike a 155 for me.

My Savage Dual Port 308, 30" Shilen Select Match barrel, likes them (155 Scenars) just touching the lands, Lapua brass, Wolf LRM primer, & H4895.

I measure at the pressure ring, just forward of the boat tail.

I am measuring the bullets lengthwise in the jaws of a digital caliper so the widest point, the pressure ring at the boattail, would be the one indicated.

Both the 155 and 168 Scenars measure .3080.

Was in a Palma match yesterday as a warm-up for the Provincials next weekend. Let me verify elevations for the .308 that is now my main gun. Shot 155 SMKs for 800 and 900. Was 4 rounds short for the 1000. Didn`t have time to buy more SMKs before the weekend. A buddy let me use 4 of his, Lapua brass and 155 Scenars. He said 2850 fps, same as my loads.

Had no idea where the 12th shot, the first Scenar, was going to hit at 1000. Since the match was a mix of Palma and F Class, we all shot on the DCRA Palma 5 ring target with the 1 minute V-ring. First shot was a 4 at 12 o`clock. Same wind as the SMK. Came down a minute - high 5, came down another minute - low 5. Another minute down - center V.

So the 155 Scenars shot 3 minutes higher than the 155 SMKs at 1000, probably due to the higher Scenar BC. Haven`t seen any of the "new" 155 SMKs in Canada yet. Will be interesting to compare them to the Scenars.

You have probably already read this, but the link is Bryan Litz's 2009 update for Fullbore bullets. He shows the Lapua Scenar and Berger Fullbore as almost identical. The new Sierra 2156 is a bit back and the old Sierra 2155 outclassed substantially by the newer bullets.

I shoot Berger 210 BT-LR in F/TR at ~2630 from a 10" twist, 30" barrel. The recoil is manageable at 18 lbs. and ballistics significantly better than the 155.5 at 2990 in the same rifle. Do Canadian rules require <156 in F/TR?

Gator, the rules for F/TR or F(R) or F(F) or whatever the heck it is called now have changed so often that Canada is coping a plea and allowing any bullet weight and any rest for .308 at the Canadian Nationals in a few weeks.

Within a few years I suspect that Canada will be fully bound to ICFRA, the European body that determines targets for everyone but the U.S. This will mean any bullet weight and front bipod only for F/TR.

Odd that International shooting rules are determined by countries were the average citizen cannot own a firearm. Canada and the U.S stand alone in fighting anti-firearms laws.

Hi I was just looking at replacing my barrel for the savage 12 FTR stock set up and was wondering if you have the same action ? The FTR comes with a large diameter action well larger than a regular 308 small action does shine make savage barrels to fit the single loading FTR action?
Thanks any help understanding how to get a better barrel is great

Call Northland shooters supply for a Savage replacement barrel.
Criterion or Shilen large or standard shank

Start at touch and work back after confirming charge weight.
Pick your poison...
Ladder or OCW test.

Previous 308win barrel liked the 155 scenars and wasn't picky about seating depth. I settled on 0.007" in the lands.

Honestly , there's no way to say what your rifle likes.... It's an old story but one that stays true... The only way to find out is to test.. put some batteries in your crono , then let the paper tell the story at the distance you want.... Rinse and repeat...

SSG 3000, 155 Scenar at .040 jump is where mine settled in. Mine proved to be almost indifferent to amount of jump. Did not try anything on or into the lands.

As I am using a Palma '95 chamber mine are well inside the case. That said, they shoot very well .020" off and I am still able to get 26.5gr. of Varget in the case for velocity around 3000 fps with not pressure issues. Lapua Palma brass, CCI 450 primers.
